Description:


1. Position Overview


The Legal Officer will be responsible for ensuring company compliance with all statutory, labour, environmental, and industrial laws applicable to the steel manufacturing sector. The role involves drafting and reviewing contracts, handling labour matters, coordinating with external advocates, managing legal documentation, and mitigating legal risks for the organization.


2. Key Responsibilities


A. Statutory & Regulatory Compliance


Ensure compliance with all applicable central and state laws, including:


- Factories Act


- Labour Laws (EPF, ESIC, Bonus, Gratuity, Minimum Wages, CLRA, ID Act)


- Environmental regulations (Pollution Control Board, Air & Water Act)


- Metallurgical industry-specific norms


- Maintain updated licenses, approvals, and renewals (Factory License, Boiler License, Fire NOC, Pollution NOC, etc.).


- Conduct periodic internal audits to track compliance gaps.


B. Legal Documentation & Drafting


Draft, vet, and review:


- Employment contracts


- Vendor and service agreements


- Purchase orders and supply contracts


- Non-disclosure agreements (NDAs)


- MoUs and commercial contracts


Create and maintain legal templates and document control systems.


C. Labour & Industrial Relations Support


- Handle labour disputes, employee grievances, and disciplinary actions as per Industrial Employment Standing Orders.


- Coordinate with labour department officials for inspections and compliances.


- Support HR in preparing notices, warnings, domestic enquiry documents, and case files.


- Assist in negotiations and settlements with unions (if applicable).


D. Litigation Management


- Coordinate with external advocates for labour court cases, civil matters, consumer cases, and any criminal cases affecting the company.


- Prepare case briefs, documentation, affidavits, and follow-up reports.


- Attend court hearings when required.


E. Company Records & Documentation


Maintain:


- Legal registers


- Case status trackers


- Compliance checklist


- Notice period and HR policy documentation (if supporting HR)


- Ensure proper records of contracts, legal opinions, and compliance reports.


F. Risk Mitigation


- Identify potential legal risks and provide preventive solutions.


- Advise management on legal implications of business decisions.


- Ensure all operations comply with safety and environmental laws to prevent penalties.


3. Desired Qualifications


- LLB (Mandatory); LLM preferred but not required.


- 10-20 years of legal experience, preferably in manufacturing/steel/industrial setup.


- Strong understanding of labour laws, industrial disputes, and regulatory compliances.


4. Skills & Competencies


- Good knowledge of Factory Act and labour compliance


- Contract drafting expertise


- Communication & negotiation skills


- Detail-oriented and disciplined


- Ability to handle labour disputes professionally


- Strong coordination with HR, Admin, and external authorities


5. Salary Range (Indicative)


- Based on industry norms for a 700-employee manufacturing plant:
