Technical Director - Road Safety | Not For Profit


Job Description:


We are seeking a highly motivated, technically sound, and impact-driven Technical Director to lead the implementation of our Zero-Fatality Corridor (ZFC) and Zero-Fatality District (ZFD) programs across India and beyond. This is a leadership role that sits at the heart of the foundations mission to eliminate road crash deaths through cutting-edge engineering, intelligent enforcement, responsive trauma care, and deep community engagement.

As Technical Director, you will oversee all program execution from a technical standpoint-particularly the road engineering and design components-while also ensuring integration of other critical verticals including traffic enforcement, emergency care, and community behaviour change.

Role and Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership & Strategy:

- Lead and guide the design, review, and implementation of high-quality engineering interventions across ZFC and ZFD projects to ensure safer roads.

- Provide technical leadership on road safety audits, crash diagnostics, infrastructure improvement plans, and urban design-based traffic calming.

- Develop scalable, data-backed, and culturally contextual solutions to address safety issues across diverse geographies.

- Lead development and delivery of training modules for engineers, enforcement institutions and Govt. Officials.

- Build internal technical leadership pipeline

Program Oversight & Execution:

- Coordinate across verticals (enforcement, trauma care, community engagement) to ensure integrated delivery of the ZFC and ZFD solutions.

- Oversee external consultants, civil contractors, and state agencies involved in implementing engineering and enforcement recommendations.

- Monitor quality, timelines, and cost-effectiveness of all technical deliverables and field implementations.

Innovation & Learning:

- Stay abreast of new technologies, methods, and policies related to road safety, enforcement automation, and trauma systems.

- Experiment with and integrate relevant innovations into the foundations programs for greater efficiency and impact.

- Writing and contributing to technical publications Stakeholder Engagement

- Work closely with government departments (e.g., PWD, NHAI, Police) and international partners to ensure smooth implementation.

- Represent the foundation in technical meetings, conferences, and workshops.

Professional Experience:

- Degree in Civil Engineering, Urban Design, or Transportation Planning. A Master's degree will be an added advantage.

- 15+ years of progressive experience leading infrastructure or urban transport projects, preferably with a focus on road safety.

- Proven experience in road safety audits, street redesign, or highway safety interventions.

- Familiarity with enforcement systems and trauma care infrastructure (preferred but not mandatory).

- Strong project management skills, including team leadership, vendor oversight, and cross-functional coordination.

- Ability to work under pressure, travel extensively, and adapt quickly to field realities.

- A commitment to public interest work, with a sharp mind for problem-solving and an empathetic approach to community needs.
