Position: Group Commercial Head
Department: Commercial / Procurement / Logistics / Contracts
Industry: Steel Manufacturing (Integrated Steel Plant / Rolling Mills / Sponge Iron)
Experience: 20 to 25 Years in Commercial Operations within Steel Manufacturing Sector.
Qualification: MBA (Finance / Operations / Supply Chain) or B.Tech with relevant experience.
Role Overview:-
The Commercial Head will oversee the entire commercial operations, procurement, contracts, logistics, and cost control functions across multiple steel manufacturing units of the group.
Key Responsibilities:-
1. Procurement & Sourcing:
- Lead strategic and operational procurement of Raw materials, consumables, capital equipment, and services.
- Ensure timely availability of materials such as Coal, iron ore, scrap, ferro alloys, and refractories.
- Negotiate contracts and supply agreements with vendors, traders, and transporters to achieve cost competitiveness.
2. Contract Management:
- Draft, review, and manage all commercial contracts including purchase agreements, tenders, and work orders.
- Ensure adherence to company policies, commercial terms, and statutory requirements.
- Coordinate with legal and finance teams for contract finalization and risk mitigation.
3. Logistics & Supply Chain Coordination:
- Oversee inbound and outbound logistics for raw materials and finished goods.
- Optimize freight costs through route planning, rake management, and coordination with railways, ports, and transporters.
- Monitor material movement to ensure timely delivery and stock availability at plants.
4. Cost Control & Commercial Analysis:
- Track and analyze procurement costs, logistics expenses, and vendor performance.
- Implement cost reduction strategies and process improvements across the supply chain.
- Support management in budget planning, commercial forecasting, and cost audits.
5. Vendor & Payment Management:
- Ensure timely release of payments to suppliers while maintaining proper documentation and credit controls.
- Maintain healthy vendor relationships through transparent communication and periodic performance evaluation.
6. Compliance & Audit:
- Ensure compliance with GST, Customs, Mines & Minerals Regulations, Pollution Control, and other statutory norms.
- Facilitate internal and external audits by providing necessary data and documentation.
- Maintain accurate records of contracts, tenders, and procurement transactions.
7. Strategic Planning:
- Contribute to long-term sourcing strategies, group-level synergy creation, and material cost optimization.
- Support management in identifying new suppliers, new material sources, and business partnerships.
Key Skills & Competencies:
- Strong understanding of commercial processes in steel or heavy manufacturing sector.
- Expertise in procurement, contracts, logistics, and supply chain economics.
- Sound knowledge of import/export documentation, taxation, and vendor compliance.
- Excellent negotiation, analytical, and leadership skills.
- Proficiency in SAP / ERP systems, MS Excel, and commercial reporting tools.
- Strong integrity, attention to detail, and result-oriented mindset.
