Job Title: General Manager Legal Location: Mumbai Department: Legal & Compliance Reports to: Head - Legal / Managing Director / CEO Experience: 1520 years Education: LL.B / LL.M from a reputed institution Industry Preference: Cement / Mining / Infrastructure / Manufacturing Role Summary: The General Manager Legal will lead the legal function and provide strategic legal counsel to the management team with a focus on mining-related laws, land acquisition, environmental compliance, contract management, and regulatory affairs. The role demands strong leadership, domain expertise in mining and manufacturing regulations, and the ability to proactively manage legal risk across business operations. Key Responsibilities: Legal Advisory & Compliance - Provide strategic legal advice on mining operations, including regulatory requirements under MMDR Act, Mines Act, and Environmental laws. - Ensure compliance with mining leases, statutory clearances, and related permits. - Interpret and advise on legal implications of business activities, especially those related to land acquisition, forest clearance, and industrial development. Litigation & Dispute Resolution - Handle and supervise litigation matters involving mining disputes, land compensation, labor, environment, and contract enforcement. - Liaise with external legal counsel and represent the company before courts, tribunals, and regulatory authorities. - Drive resolution of legal issues with government agencies and local authorities. Contracts & Commercial Law - Draft, review, and negotiate contracts including mining development agreements, supply chain agreements, EPC contracts, lease deeds, and MoUs. - Structure legally compliant frameworks for vendor engagement, project execution, and public-private partnerships. Land & Property Management - Oversee legal due diligence and documentation for land acquisition and leasehold/ownership rights required for mining and plant operations. - Ensure title verification, mutation, and other revenue records are accurate and updated. Regulatory & Environmental Compliance - Monitor and ensure compliance with mining, environmental, labor, and safety regulations. - Work closely with environment, safety, and sustainability teams to ensure adherence to statutory and ESG norms. - Handle notices, audits, and inspections from government and quasi-judicial bodies (e.g., MOEF, DGMS, PCB, SEIAA, CPCB). Leadership & Governance - Lead the legal function across plants and sites; mentor a team of legal officers and liaise with external consultants. - Contribute to risk management, ethics, and corporate governance frameworks. - Support internal stakeholders with training on legal policies, contract management, and regulatory changes. Key Skills & Competencies: - In-depth knowledge of mining law, land and environmental regulations - Strong contract negotiation and legal drafting skills - Experience in handling complex litigation and regulatory matters - Strategic thinking with the ability to balance business and legal risks - Strong stakeholder management with public authorities, communities, and legal forums - Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills Preferred Experience: - Legal leadership role in cement, mining, infrastructure, or heavy manufacturing sectors - Direct exposure to land acquisition, mine expansion projects, and environmental clearances - Familiarity with multi-location plant operations and legal issues in rural/semi-urban geographies
