
Role Overview:
The Head of Department (Computer Science) is a senior academic leadership role responsible for providing strategic, academic, and administrative leadership to the Computer Science department. The role involves driving excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and industry engagement while ensuring compliance with accreditation standards and institutional goals. The HOD will play a critical role in shaping future-ready programs, fostering a strong research culture, and enhancing student outcomes and employability.
Key Responsibilities:
Academic & Research Leadership:
- Provide strategic vision and leadership for undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in Computer Science.
- Lead curriculum design, review, and continuous improvement aligned with global academic standards and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, Internet of Things, Blockchain, and Advanced Software Engineering.
- Ensure effective implementation of Outcome-Based Education (OBE), accreditation frameworks (NBA/NAAC/ABET or equivalent), and academic quality benchmarks.
- Promote a strong research culture by driving funded research projects, industry-sponsored research, patents, intellectual property creation, and publications in high-impact journals and conferences.
- Encourage innovation, entrepreneurship, and startup incubation activities within the department.
Faculty & Department Management:
- Lead, mentor, and manage faculty members, researchers, and technical staff to ensure high standards of teaching, research, and service.
- Drive faculty recruitment, onboarding, workload planning, performance appraisal, and succession planning.
- Support faculty development through training programs, certifications, conferences, and advanced research opportunities.
- Foster interdisciplinary teaching and research collaboration across departments and institutions.
- Ensure effective utilization of faculty expertise and departmental resources.
Student Success & Development:
- Ensure excellence in student learning outcomes, academic progression, retention, and overall student experience.
- Promote experiential learning through internships, industry projects, hackathons, coding competitions, research internships, and professional certifications.
- Strengthen placement readiness through curriculum alignment, skill development initiatives, and collaboration with placement and training cells.
- Address student academic, behavioral, and disciplinary matters in accordance with institutional policies and regulations.
- Encourage student participation in research, innovation challenges, competitive programming, and global academic platforms.
Industry & External Engagement:
- Build and sustain strong partnerships with industry, research organizations, startups, and professional bodies to ensure curriculum relevance and practical exposure.
- Establish and lead Centres of Excellence in advanced computing domains in collaboration with industry and government agencies.
- Facilitate collaborative research, consultancy, executive education, and technology transfer initiatives.
- Represent the department in academic councils, industry forums, accreditation bodies, conferences, and government initiatives.
Administration & Governance:
- Plan and manage departmental budgets, laboratories, computing infrastructure, software licenses, and other academic resources.
- Ensure effective planning, execution, and monitoring of departmental activities and KPIs.
- Participate actively in institutional committees, strategic planning initiatives, audits, and accreditation processes.
- Ensure compliance with institutional policies, regulatory requirements, and statutory bodies.
- Prepare and present departmental reports, academic reviews, and performance metrics to institutional leadership.
Qualifications & Experience:
- PhD in Computer Science or a closely related discipline from a recognized institution.
- Strong academic and research background with a proven record of publications, funded projects, and academic leadership.
- Significant teaching, research, and administrative experience in higher education, with prior leadership roles preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in curriculum design, accreditation processes, and OBE implementation.
