Job Description:

Strategic Advisor / Consultant - Energy Management & Controls (Renewable Energy)

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced, globally recognized industry expert to serve as a Strategic Advisor / Consultant for our Energy Management & Controls business unit. This business vertical is strictly focused on renewable energy, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), microgrids, distributed energy resources (DER), and utility-grid modernization.

The Strategic Advisor will provide critical, independent guidance on market trends, technology strategy, customer requirements, competitive positioning, partnerships, and product roadmap development. The ideal candidate must possess significant industry recognition, executive-level gravitas, and a mature professional network across utilities, renewable developers, EPCs, system integrators, grid operators, and regulatory bodies.

The primary goal of this role is to accelerate market adoption and solidify our market share in emerging energy transition spaces, including Energy Management Systems (EMS), Power Plant Controllers (PPC), Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS), Virtual Power Plants (VPP), and grid-scale BESS solutions. The scope directly aligns with modern utility-grid integration requirements around microgrids, BESS controls, grid balancing, ancillary services, and advanced energy management platforms.

Key Advisory Responsibilities

1. Market & Industry Strategy:

- Trend Identification: Provide deep, data-backed insights on global and regional renewable energy markets, macroeconomic shifts, and technological trends.

- Emerging Opportunities: Advise on high-growth segments including utility-scale BESS, hybrid renewable power plants, microgrids, DER orchestration, and large-scale grid modernization initiatives.

- Market Analysis: Assess segment attractiveness, multi-region growth potential, emerging risk vectors, and competitive dynamics.

- Strategic Expansion: Identify and build business cases for strategic growth segments and adjacent target markets.

2. Technology & Product Advisory:

- Roadmap Architecture: Review and advise on long-term product roadmaps related to EMS, Microgrid Controllers, PPC, and renewable integration architectures.

- Differentiation Strategy: Recommend unique technology differentiation strategies to position our offerings ahead of industry competitors.

- Requirement Engineering: Develop, critique, and review detailed functional and system design specifications.

- Optimization Guidance: Provide expert counsel on grid services, energy optimization algorithms, control loop architectures, and complex wholesale market participation models.

3. Customer & Ecosystem Engagement:

- Network Mobilization: Facilitate strategic, high-level introductions to target customers, key accounts, and enterprise partners.

- Executive Representation: Participate actively in executive-level customer meetings and technical solution reviews as a trusted industry advisor.

- Procurement Intelligence: Advise internal teams on changing customer buying trends, technical evaluations, and utility procurement strategies.

- Thought Leadership: Champion visibility by supporting thought-leadership initiatives, white papers, technical webinars, industry conferences, and executive roundtables.

4. Regulatory & Standards Guidance:

- Policy Monitoring: Continuously track evolving utility grid regulations, environmental mandates, and national/international energy policies.

- Grid Compliance: Advise engineering teams on grid-code compliance and rigid renewable integration requirements across multi-region markets.

- Stakeholder Alignment: Provide actionable insights on what utility executives, ISO/RTO committees, and regulatory bodies expect from new grid additions.

5. Competitive Intelligence:

- Benchmarking Loops: Continually benchmark our technical offerings against competitor strategies, features, and pricing structures.

- Gap Assessment: Identify unaddressed market gaps, product vulnerabilities, and emerging disruptive innovations.

- M&A Advisory: Advise leadership on potential strategic partnerships, technology acquisitions, and ecosystem collaboration opportunities.

6. Technical Project Execution Support:

- Testing & Validation: Participate selectively in high-value design reviews, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), site commissioning, and final performance validation.

- Root Cause Intervention: Provide elite troubleshooting support for complex EMS, SCADA, PPC, and BESS integration challenges.

- Scalable Implementations: Review site-specific control requirements and design robust, repeatable, and scalable implementation strategies.

- Cross-Functional Bridge: Work as a seamless technical conduit between product management, core engineering, and field-commissioning teams.

Required Experience & Competencies

Minimum Qualifications & Experience:

- Industry Tenure: 20+ years of dedicated experience within electric utilities, utility-scale renewable energy companies, grid operators (ISO/RTO organizations), energy technology providers, or tier-1 energy consulting firms.

- Subject Matter Expertise: Nationally or globally recognized subject matter expert in Energy Management Systems (EMS), Grid Controls, BESS, Renewable Integration frameworks, or complex Microgrid Systems.

Desired Technical Skills:

- Grid Frameworks: Extensive domain knowledge in utility operations, grid modernization loops, and renewable energy integration.

- Platform Systems: Deep hands-on familiarity with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), Microgrid Controllers, Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS), DERMS, and Virtual Power Plants (VPP).

- Power Optimization: Expert understanding of ancillary service markets, grid balancing economics, and power system optimization algorithms.

- Communication Protocols: Proficiency with industrial communication standards including IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, and OPC-UA.

- OT Security & Infrastructure: Strong grounding in cybersecure OT architectures and hardware-level time synchronization technologies.

- Simulation Suites: Familiarity with high-fidelity simulation and validation software, including PSCAD, RTDS, EMT studies, and dynamic grid simulation workflows.

Leadership & Consulting Competencies:

- Consultative Aptitude: Proven consulting, technical presentation, and high-impact customer engagement skills.

- Executive Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence C-suite stakeholders and regulators.

- Strategic Focus: A sharp, analytical, and strategic problem-solving mindset capable of translating market challenges into product roadmap items.

- Product Balancing: Proven capability to effectively balance site-specific client requirements with standardized, scalable product development practices.
