Job Description:
1. JOB PURPOSE:
- The Senior Economist will join the in-house Economic Research team and report directly to the Chief Economist. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the teams research agenda, providing strategic, forward-looking insights on the Indian economy to senior management, and contributing to high-quality publications and thought leadership.
- She/He will be responsible for leading and independently managing research projects, guiding junior economists where necessary, and driving the development of analytical and forecasting frameworks. The role will focus on deepening the firms understanding of business cycles, structural economic trends, and their implications for credit quality and risk assessment, while strengthening the organizations capacity for data-driven decision-making.
2. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. High-Quality Research & Strategic Thought Leadership:
- Provide strategic, forward-looking assessments of the Indian economy to support senior management and help shape business strategy.
- Lead and oversee the end-to-end production of high-impact research, ensuring the generation of original ideas, rigorous analysis, and high-quality publications for internal and external stakeholders.
- Drive evaluations of government and central bank policy decisions, assessing their macroeconomic implications and sector-level impacts to guide internal strategy and client communication.
- Monitor, interpret, and synthesize national and regional economic trends, labour market conditions, and their implications for household finance, MSMEs, and financial markets (bond, currency, and credit).
- Provide strategic insights into credit cycles, credit performance, and evolving credit quality to strengthen internal risk management and identify emerging opportunities.
- Design and refine forward-looking analytical frameworks and models to enhance the organizations credit decisioning processes.
- Champion the development of advanced tools, frameworks, and methodologies that enhance macroeconomic, sectoral, and regional analytical capabilities across the company.
2. Data Management, Analytics & Insight Generation:
- Oversee the interpretation of complex macroeconomic indicators, ensuring robust differentiation between anomalies and underlying trends, and delivering clear, actionable insights.
- Guide the development and maintenance of comprehensive macroeconomic databases, supporting advanced analytics, forecasting tools, and scenario-building frameworks.
- Lead the creation of quantitative models for nowcasting, forecasting, and simulation, strengthening analytical rigor and enhancing the evidence base for strategic recommendations.
- Promote best practices in data management, modelling, and econometric analysis, supporting the continuous upskilling of the team and improving research quality.
3. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
Educational Qualifications:
a) Qualifications:
- Qualification required: Postgraduate in Economics/Statistics from reputable college.
b) Work Experience and Skills Requirement:
- 10 - 15 years of relevant experience in Indian economic research within the financial industry, research institutions, or rating agencies.
- Strong understanding of the Indian economy, credit cycles, and their linkages with global economic and market dynamics.
- Proven ability to manage projects independently, solve complex problems, take full ownership of assignments, and deliver high-quality outputs.
- Demonstrated experience in mentoring and guiding junior team members.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to extract key insights, generate innovative ideas, and lead research initiatives.
- Solid familiarity with Indias macroeconomic data ecosystem, including major data sources, frequency, limitations, and hands-on experience with the CMIE database.
- Econometric and data-handling skills are an advantage; proficiency in at least one statistical/econometric software (e.g., EViews, R, STATA) is preferred but not mandatory.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
