Role Purpose
The SME - Boiler & Utilities (Mechanical) will provide strategic, technical, and governance leadership for boiler houses and critical utility systems across multiple pharmaceutical formulation sites. The role ensures reliable, safe, compliant, and energy-efficient operation of utilities in line with GMP, regulatory, and sustainability requirements, while supporting business continuity and growth.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Governance
- Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for boilers and utilities across all assigned manufacturing sites.
- Define and implement utility engineering strategy aligned with business objectives, regulatory expectations, and sustainability goals.
- Establish standardised utility design, operating philosophies, SOPs, and best practices across sites.
Boiler & Steam Systems Management
- Lead end-to-end management of HP/LP boilers, steam generation, condensate recovery, and distribution systems.
- Ensure optimal boiler efficiency, reliability, redundancy, and lifecycle management.
- Oversee water treatment systems, fuel management, and statutory boiler operations.
Compliance & Regulatory Readiness
- Ensure utilities comply with GMP, USFDA, local statutory requirements, and global quality standards.
- Lead utility readiness for regulatory inspections, internal audits, and third-party assessments.
- Drive implementation and compliance with ISO 50001 (Energy Management Systems).
Energy Optimisation & Sustainability
- Identify and implement energy optimisation initiatives across boilers and utilities to reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and operating costs.
- Lead energy audits, benchmarking, and performance monitoring of utility systems.
- Support decarbonisation and sustainability initiatives linked to energy efficiency and resource optimisation.
Capital Projects & Asset Reliability
- Lead utility-related CAPEX planning, budgeting, and execution for greenfield, brownfield, and expansion projects.
- Review and approve utility designs, technical specifications, vendor selection, FAT/SAT, commissioning, and validation.
- Establish asset reliability programmes including preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.
Safety, Risk & Business Continuity
- Drive a strong safety culture within boiler houses and utility operations.
- Ensure adherence to mechanical and process safety standards, including hazard identification and risk mitigation.
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure business continuity through redundancy planning and emergency preparedness.
Stakeholder & People Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop site utility engineering teams.
- Collaborate closely with Manufacturing, Quality, EHS, Procurement, and Corporate Engineering functions.
- Manage external contractors, OEMs, utilities service providers, and regulatory authorities.
Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- 1825+ years of progressive experience in boiler and utility engineering within pharmaceutical formulations or regulated manufacturing environments.
- Strong hands-on expertise in HP/LP boilers, steam systems, utilities infrastructure, and water/energy systems.
- Proven experience working in GMP and USFDA-regulated facilities.
- Demonstrated capability in energy optimisation, asset reliability, compliance management, and audits.
Desirable
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering (mandatory); postgraduate or specialised certifications preferred.
- Experience in ISO 50001 implementation and energy management leadership.
- Prior experience managing multi-site utilities operations at senior manager or engineering head level.
