1. Role Overview
- The Head of Logistics will lead and optimize end-to-end international logistics operations with a core focus on importing chemical cargo via bulk tankers, dry bulk vessels, and containerized freight.
- This role is both strategic and operational, ensuring timely, cost-effective, safe, and compliant transportation from global suppliers to domestic facilities. The position requires deep experience in vessel chartering, regulatory compliance, port operations, hazardous cargo management, and last-mile delivery.
- The incumbent will play a pivotal role in aligning logistics operations with business goals while leading a high-performing logistics team.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Logistics Strategy ; Operations
- Develop and implement logistics strategies to enhance delivery timelines, optimize cost, and improve safety.
- Lead end-to-end logistics operations for chemical imports (bulk tankers, dry bulk, FCL/LCL).
- Collaborate with procurement, manufacturing, planning, and HSE teams for seamless inbound flow.
B. Vessel Chartering & Freight Management
- Manage spot and long-term chartering of vessels (chemical tankers, dry bulk, containers).
- Negotiate freight contracts, charter party terms, and demurrage clauses.
- Maintain relationships with ship owners, brokers, NVOCCs, and freight forwarding partners.
C. Regulatory ; Compliance
- Ensure adherence to global chemical transport regulations (IMDG, MARPOL, REACH, DG norms).
- Oversee customs clearance, import documentation (MSDS, COO, B/L), and regulatory approvals.
- Monitor proper classification, packaging, and labelling of hazardous cargo.
D. Port, Terminal & Last-Mile Coordination
- Manage coordination with port authorities, terminals, and warehouse facilities.
- Supervise transport from port to plant via road tankers, ISO tanks, IBCs, or drums.
- Ensure quality checks, safe unloading procedures, and issue resolution.
E. Cost, Risk ; Performance Management
- Track freight market trends and benchmark logistics costs.
- Implement logistics cost optimization initiatives.
- Monitor and report key operational KPIs (OTIF, transit time, demurrage, exceptions).
- Handle risk mitigation for delays, cargo damage, spillages, or port disruptions.
F. Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and build a logistics team (approx. 15 members).
- Develop strong partnerships with transporters, warehouses, and 3PL operators.
- Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and performance excellence.
3. Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelors/Masters in Supply Chain, Logistics, International Trade, Marine Engineering, or related field
- 15-20 years in logistics/supply chain
- Minimum 5+ years in senior/logistics leadership role
- Chemicals, petrochemicals, commoditized industrial trade or similar
- Vessel chartering, sea freight (bulk & container), hazardous cargo handling
- Strong understanding of maritime and international logistics regulations
- Proficiency in ERP, logistics platforms, and shipping documentation systems
