
Role Overview
The Head - Engineering & Utilities will serve as the senior-most technical authority responsible for the end-to-end engineering, utilities, and facilities operations of a 600+ bed, multi-specialty hospital.
This is a critical leadership role focused on ensuring 24/7 operational reliability of all infrastructure and clinical support systems. The incumbent will lead a large multi-disciplinary team, ensure regulatory compliance, and collaborate with hospital leadership on capital planning and long-term infrastructure strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership across all engineering and facilities functions within the hospital campus.
Ensure uninterrupted availability and performance of all critical utilities, including:
- HT/LT electrical systems
- DG backup and UPS systems
- Medical gas pipeline systems
- Water supply and plumbing
- HVAC and chiller systems
- Lead, mentor, and manage a large multi-disciplinary engineering team across shifts, ensuring high performance and accountability.
- Design and implement preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs using CMMS tools.
- Ensure full compliance with all regulatory and statutory standards including NABH, AERB, NBC, CPCB, and local authorities.
- Drive engineering execution for all capital projects including new builds, expansions, renovations, and equipment installations.
- Manage overall engineering budgets, including OPEX, CAPEX, AMCs, spares, and vendor performance.
- Establish and maintain robust disaster preparedness, business continuity, and emergency response plans for all engineering systems.
- Lead initiatives focused on energy efficiency, sustainability, and cost optimization.
- Collaborate with clinical teams, administration, government authorities, and external consultants on engineering-related matters.
- Ensure all fire and life safety systems (detection, suppression, evacuation) are fully compliant and operational at all times.
- Continuously review, upgrade, and standardize SOPs, audit readiness, and documentation practices.
Qualifications & Experience
- Master's degree or MBA in Hospital/Infrastructure Management is preferred.
8-12 years of relevant experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within:
- Large hospitals (500+ beds), or
- Comparable critical infrastructure environments
- Strong technical expertise across:
- MEP systems
- HVAC and chiller systems
- HT/LT electrical systems
- Medical gases
- Fire and life safety systems
- Proven experience managing:
- Large engineering teams
- Budgets exceeding ?10 Cr
- Multi-vendor ecosystems
- In-depth knowledge of NABH standards, AERB norms, National Building Code, and local statutory regulations.
- Hands-on experience with CMMS, BAS/BMS systems, AutoCAD, and MS Office tools.
