Head-Collections & Recovery for a mid-sized NBFC

Our clients are seeking a highly accomplished Collections & Recovery professional to lead the function from the company's head office.

Job Description - Head, Collections & Recovery

Location: Mumbai

Reports To: CEO / Head of Credit Administration

Role Purpose:

Lead and manage the end-to-end collections and recovery function of the NBFC, ensuring optimization of cash flows, minimization of NPAs, regulatory compliance, and effective risk management while maintaining customer relationships and brand reputation.

Key Responsibilities:

Collections & Recovery Strategy:

- Design and implement robust collection and recovery strategies across secured and unsecured loan portfolios.

- Drive efficiency across early-stage, mid-stage, and late-stage collections.

- Leverage digital tools, AI/ML analytics, dashboards, and field collection models to improve recovery rates.

Portfolio Risk Management:

- Monitor delinquency trends, vintage analysis, and bounce rates across products.

- Proactively manage NPAs within board and regulatory limits.

- Escalate and resolve high-risk accounts timely.

Operations & Team Leadership:

- Lead zonal/regional collections teams, in-house staff, and outsourced agencies.

- Define and track KPIs: bucket-wise resolution %, DPD reduction, cost of collections.

- Foster a culture of performance, accountability, and compliance.

Regulatory & Legal Compliance:

- Ensure adherence to RBI, Fair Practices Code, and NBFC guidelines in collections and recovery.

- Manage SARFAESI, DRT, Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code (IBC) proceedings, settlements, and legal recoveries.

- Oversee third-party vendors (advocates, valuers, recovery agencies) and internal stakeholders for resolution and compliance.

Stakeholder Management:

- Collaborate with Risk, Credit, Operations, Finance, and Legal teams to minimize credit losses.

- Present MIS, dashboards, and portfolio insights to management, board committees, and regulators.

- Process & Technology - Build predictive models, Early Warning Systems, and automation for recovery processes.

- Lead process improvement, policy development, and digital adoption aligned with regulatory and legal frameworks.

Candidate Profile:

Education:

- Graduate/Postgraduate in Finance or Law.

- CA/MBA preferred.

Experience:

- 15-24 years overall, with 5-10 years in NBFCs or mid-sized private banks.

- Minimum 8 years in collections and at least 5 years in recovery/stressed assets management at zonal/national level.

- Proven track record in NPAs reduction, cost optimization, and portfolio management.

Skills & Competencies:

- Deep understanding of collections, risk management, and regulatory framework.

- Strong negotiation, crisis management, and leadership skills.

- Experience managing SARFAESI, DRT, IBC, settlements, and legal recovery processes.

- Experience dealing with board, committees, regulators, and external vendors.

- Business-oriented, ethical, assertive, self-starter with strong interpersonal and communication skills , Ability to balance compliance, customer empathy, and recovery outcomes.

Key KPIs:

- Reduction in Gross & Net NPA %.

- Bucket-wise collection efficiency (30+ DPD, 90+ DPD).

- Resolution % of overdue accounts.

- Cost of collections vs recovery efficiency.

-Compliance audit scores and regulatory adherence.
