General Manager - Shipping Operations
Description:
A General Manager (GM) of Inland Shipping Operations is a senior leadership role responsible for the end-to-end management of cargo movement via inland waterways, rail, and road. This role bridges the gap between maritime ports and hinterland destinations, ensuring seamless, cost-effective, and compliant logistics.
Core Responsibilities:- Operational Strategy: Oversee and optimize all inland operational functions, including the management of Inland Container Depots (ICD) and Rail & Inland Terminals.
- Vendor & Asset Management: Manage relationships and contracts with transporters, fleet owners, and shipping agents to ensure a dedicated pool of resources for client needs.
- Logistics Planning: Design and implement route optimization strategies and vessel schedules to reduce lead times and operational costs.
- Compliance & Liasoning: Interact with Customs officials for bill of entry assessments and ensure strict adherence to international trade, maritime, and safety regulations.
- Financial Oversight: Manage the department's P&L, budgets, and logistics costs while driving profitability across all units.
- Technical Supervision: Monitor vessel handling, cargo stability, and maintenance schedules to prevent unplanned downtime.
Key Requirements:- Experience: Typically 1015+ years of senior leadership in shipping, supply chain, or break-bulk cargo.
- Knowledge: Deep expertise in Incoterms, shipping documentation, customs clearance, and Exim policy.
- Skills: Strong negotiation for charter party terms, analytical skills for risk management, and leadership to manage cross-functional teams.
Performance Indicators (KPIs):- Reduction in cargo turnaround time.
- Percentage reduction in logistics and freight costs.
- Zero non-compliance incidents with port or customs authorities.
- Optimization of vessel/truck loading capacity to boost revenue.
