Job Summary:
The Finance Controller is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting operations, ensuring the financial health of the organization, and guaranteeing compliance with local Ugandan laws, international accounting standards (e.g., IFRS), and internal company policies. This role provides strategic financial guidance to the management team to support business growth and efficient operation within the Ugandan market.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Financial Reporting & Compliance:
- Oversee all accounting operations, including General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting, and Revenue Recognition.
- Lead the preparation and publishing of accurate, timely, and complete monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with IFRS (or relevant accounting standard) and company policy.
- Manage the month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Coordinate the preparation of all required regulatory reporting specific to Uganda.
- Liaise with external auditors, manage the annual audit process, and ensure all audit requirements are met.
2. Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis:
- Coordinate and direct the preparation of the annual budget and financial forecasts, collaborating with department heads across the Ugandan operations.
- Analyze financial performance, identifying trends, variances, opportunities, and risks, and provide timely, insightful management reports to support strategic decision-making.
- Conduct variance analysis between actual results and budget/forecast, and propose corrective actions.
- Monitor and analyze business performance against agreed-upon Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
3. Treasury and Cash Flow Management:
- Manage cash flow effectively, including forecasting, monitoring bank balances, and ensuring sufficient liquidity to meet operational needs.
- Oversee debtor and creditor management, ensuring efficient collection and payment cycles.
- Manage foreign exchange risk exposure where applicable to the Ugandan currency (UGX).
4. Internal Controls and Risk Management:
- Develop, implement, and maintain robust financial controls and procedures to safeguard company assets and mitigate financial risks specific to the local market.
- Ensure adherence to all internal financial policies and procedures.
- Identify potential financial risks (operational, credit, currency, compliance) and recommend mitigation strategies.
6. Leadership and Team Management:
- Lead, mentor, and manage the local finance and accounting team, fostering a culture of high performance, accuracy, and continuous professional development.
- Ensure the team is proficient in both local financial practices and international accounting standards.
