Job Description: Director of Engineering (Java)

About the Role:

We are looking for an experienced Director of Engineering to lead multiple high-performing engineering teams responsible for building highly scalable, secure, and resilient financial technology products. The ideal candidate will have a strong Java engineering background, proven experience leading engineering organizations, and expertise in building distributed systems capable of handling millions of transactions. This is a strategic leadership role requiring a blend of technical depth, people leadership, product thinking, and execution excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Engineering Leadership:

- Lead and scale multiple engineering teams comprising Engineering Managers, Staff Engineers, Principal Engineers, and Software Engineers.

- Define engineering strategy aligned with business goals and product roadmap.

- Drive engineering excellence through best practices, code quality, architecture reviews, and operational excellence.

- Build an inclusive, high-performance engineering culture focused on ownership, innovation, and continuous improvement.

- Mentor engineering leaders and establish succession planning.

2. Technology & Architecture:

- Design and oversee highly scalable, distributed microservices architecture using Java and cloud-native technologies.

- Drive architecture decisions for high availability, fault tolerance, security, and performance.

- Ensure engineering systems can handle high transaction volumes with low latency.

- Lead modernization initiatives involving event-driven architecture and API-first design.

- Establish engineering standards and governance.

3. Product Delivery:

- Partner with Product Management, Design, and Business stakeholders to deliver customer-centric solutions.

- Own engineering execution, sprint planning, delivery timelines, and release management.

- Ensure predictable delivery while balancing innovation and technical debt.

- Drive Agile engineering practices across teams.

4. People Leadership:

- Hire, mentor, and develop engineering talent.

- Coach Engineering Managers and Technical Leads.

- Conduct performance reviews, career planning, and leadership development.

- Build diverse engineering teams across multiple locations.

5. Operational Excellence:

- Define Engineering KPIs and SLAs.

- Improve system reliability and uptime.

- Lead incident management and root cause analysis.

- Drive automation, CI/CD adoption, and DevOps maturity.

6. Stakeholder Management:

- Collaborate with executive leadership on technology strategy.

- Partner with Security, Compliance, Risk, and Infrastructure teams.

- Present engineering roadmaps and progress updates to senior leadership.

- Influence strategic technology investments.

Technical Skills:

- Java, Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Microservices, REST APIs

- Distributed Systems, Event-Driven Architecture, Messaging, Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ

- Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB

- Cloud Platforms: AWS

FinTech Experience:

Candidates should have experience building one or more of the following: Digital Payments, Lending Platforms, Banking Systems, Credit Risk Platforms, UPI, Wallets, Merchant Payments, Fraud Detection, Financial APIs, Regulatory & Compliance Platforms.

Required Qualifications:

- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline.

- 1620 years of software engineering experience.

- 5+ years leading engineering teams.

- Experience managing 50150+ engineers through Engineering Managers.

- Strong background in Java-based backend engineering.

- Experience building products from concept to scale.
