Job Description: Dean / Associate Dean
Role Purpose
The Dean / Associate Dean provides strategic, academic, and operational leadership to ensure the School delivers excellence in teaching, research, knowledge exchange, and business engagement. The postholder translates the Universitys mission and long-term strategy into sustainable, student-centred, research-led, and financially viable activities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership and Planning
- Translate the Universitys mission and long-term strategy into clear School-level objectives and implementation plans.
- Lead the development and delivery of student-centred, research-led, and commercially sustainable initiatives.
- Undertake systematic horizon scanning to identify sector trends, risks, and opportunities.
- Ensure alignment of School activities with institutional priorities and external drivers.
2. Academic Portfolio Development
- Build and maintain a high-quality, innovative academic portfolio aligned with the Schools strategic plan.
- Ensure programmes are student-focused, industry-relevant where appropriate, and responsive to emerging technologies.
- Maintain financial viability and sustainability of the academic portfolio.
- Promote cross-disciplinary collaboration and curriculum innovation.
3. Financial Management and Income Diversification
- Drive diversification of income through student recruitment, research funding, consultancy, and commercial activities.
- Work closely with the Finance Business Partner to ensure effective financial planning, monitoring, and resource allocation.
- Deliver agreed financial targets and ensure sustainable growth.
- Deploy resources strategically to achieve the Schools objectives.
4. Research, Knowledge Exchange, and Consultancy
- Oversee the strategic management of research, teaching, and knowledge exchange activities.
- Foster a strong research culture and support the development of consultancy services.
- Identify opportunities for growth in research income and enterprise engagement.
5. People Leadership and Workforce Development
- Create and sustain a high-performance, inclusive academic culture.
- Allocate resources effectively to support excellence across teaching, research, and professional practice.
- Lead academic staff recruitment and professional development processes.
- Oversee performance review and succession planning activities.
- Motivate and develop staff, fostering leadership at all levels.
6. Partnerships and External Engagement
- Develop and maintain strategic regional, national, and international partnerships.
- Represent the School with external stakeholders, professional bodies, and industry partners.
- Strengthen the Schools reputation and external profile.
7. Governance, Quality, and Service Enhancement
- Ensure high academic standards and quality assurance across programmes.
- Lead the academic programmes management team.
- Drive improvements in service delivery through innovative use of learning and information technologies.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and institutional requirements.
