Category Manager - Manufacturing Logistics & Packaging (6-10 yrs)
The Category Manager Logistics & Packaging is responsible for driving synergy with Global Category directors/managers to implement best practices while leading Sourcing activities across Logistics and Packaging categories.
- The role manages inland freight, warehousing, customs services, packaging procurement, and logistics contracts while ensuring alignment with local business requirements.
- The position focuses on Supplier development, Contract negotiations, automation initiatives, and providing Global visibility through category reporting and presentations.
- It also supports inbound and outbound Logistics optimization, Supply chain continuity, Cost efficiency, and Customer satisfaction through effective transportation and Packaging category strategies targeting short- and long-term priorities.
Key Responsibilities:
Category Management & Strategic Sourcing:
- Partner with Global Category Directors and Managers to implement best practices and category strategies.
- Execute Sourcing processes for Logistics in association with Global logistics team and packaging categories locally.
- Develop and negotiate local sourcing solutions for Inland Freight, Rail Transportation, Road Transportation, Sea Freight, Multi-modal Logistics, Warehousing Services, Customs House Agent (CHA) Services, and Finished Goods Packaging.
- Ensure Procurement strategies are aligned with business and Supply chain requirements.
- Drive automation initiatives within the category with a target of achieving 80% automation especially in fleet management and scheduling.
Logistics & Supply Chain Management:
- Lead structured sourcing for inbound and outbound Logistics operations.
- Manage Supplier relationships with freight forwarders, Shipping lines, Warehouse partners, and customs service providers.
- Develop understanding of sea routes and Supply chain mapping for critical raw materials and intercompany products, particularly from China, Europe, USA, and other strategic sourcing locations.
- Monitor material movements and Logistics performance to ensure uninterrupted supply.
- Coordinate closely with Supply chain planners to ensure timely contracting of transportation lanes.
- Support inventory availability by ensuring materials arrive at the right place and time at optimum Logistics cost.
Commercial Management & Cost Optimization:
- Lead complex Supplier evaluations and commercial negotiations.
- Negotiate contracts and rate agreements to secure competitive pricing and service levels.
- Identify opportunities to optimize freight costs and improve transportation efficiency.
- Minimize premium freight costs through proactive route monitoring and early market intelligence.
- Minimize cost leakages in terms of detention, delays, documentation gaps etc.
- Drive continuous cost improvement and Logistics optimization initiatives.
Reporting & Category Visibility:
- Prepare and present category performance updates in Global and regional forums.
- Develop weekly MIS reports covering shipment tracking and material arrivals for imported goods.
- Provide visibility of Logistics and Packaging spend, Supplier performance, and sourcing initiatives.
- Track contract performance and supplier service levels.
Supplier Management & Market Intelligence:
- Research shipping options and evaluate transportation solutions.
- Select and manage freight forwarders and Logistics partners.
- Monitor supply flows and transportation markets to identify risks and opportunities.
- Develop strong relationships with Logistics service providers and Packaging suppliers.
- Stay informed on Logistics market trends, freight movements, and Global Supply chain developments.
Key Skills & Competencies:
Technical Skills:
- Freight markets and sourcing norms, Contract Negotiation, Transportation Management, Route planning, Import & Export Logistics, CHA Management and Warehouse handling, Supplier Relationship Management, Spend Analysis & Cost Optimization, ERP Systems, Advanced Excel & Reporting Tools.
Qualification & Experience:
- Bachelors degree in Engineering, or a related field.
- MBA/Postgraduate qualification in Supply Chain, Procurement, Logistics, or Operations preferred.
- Minimum 4 years of experience in Logistics Procurement, Imports handling, Supply chain, or related functions.
- Experience managing Spend categories like Road freighting, Warehousing, Customs services, and packaging.
- Working knowledge of shipping lines, freight forwarders, CHA operations, and international commercial terms and implications.
- Experience in Contract negotiations, Supplier management, and Cost optimization initiatives.
Scope of Responsibility:
- Annual Spend Managed: GBP 9 Million (including Global spend)
- Supplier Base: 100+ Suppliers
- Contracts & Reviews Managed: 500
