Techmatters Technologies.2 - 3 yrs.Bangalore

BESS & Regulatory Policy Analyst

Neufin is hiring a sharp, commercially-minded analyst to join us as our BESS & Regulatory Policy Analyst.

India's energy transition is going to depend on the economics of batteries, and in the fine print of regulation. Storage is about to reshape how commercial & industrial businesses buy power. At Neufin, we're building India's first tech-led energy retailer, using our proprietary energy OS, Lumen, to orchestrate supply from solar, wind, and batteries (BESS) and deliver a single promise: 24x7x365 Best-Priced Clean Energy.

This is a hybrid role for someone who wants to sit at the intersection of storage economics and energy policy. You'll model whether a battery makes commercial sense for a client, and you'll track the CERC/SERC orders, open-access rules, and storage incentives that decide whether it stays that way. You'll own problems end-to-end.

We offer you the freedom to fail, the budget to experiment, and a responsibility to innovate. If you want to rush head-first into India's energy transition, read on.

Location: Bangalore

Role Type: Full-time

About Neufin

We're building India's first tech-led energy retailer - delivering clean, low-cost energy to India's mid-market Commercial & Industrial businesses. We leverage technology to deliver energy at scale with supply aggregated from an integrated network of IPPs, EPCs, and asset owners - solar, wind, hybrid, and BESS.

Lumen - our proprietary energy OS - gives businesses full visibility into their electricity costs, RE contract performance and helps optimise the true cost of power - bringing total visibility and control over how electricity is analysed, paid for, and audited. The result is lower power costs, cleaner energy, and easier compliance with clean energy targets.

What you'll be doing

Storage and regulation are the two variables that are moving the fastest in India's power sector. This role owns them together, so the commercial and the regulatory view never drift apart.

1. BESS Sizing & System Design:

- Size and configure battery systems for C&I use cases - peak shaving, energy arbitrage, RE firming, and backup - using modelling tools (e.g. HOMER, PVSyst, SAM, MATLAB/Python). Develop the battery sizing logic that turns a client's load and tariff profile into a right-sized system.

2. Cost Estimation & LCOS Modelling:

- Build validated cost estimates covering CAPEX and full lifecycle expenses, and develop Levelised Cost of Storage (LCOS) models across chemistries and architectures (Li-ion, LFP, NMC, flow).

3. Storage Dispatch & Value-Stacking:

- Model how a BESS behaves against real load, ToD tariffs, and IEX price signals - quantifying arbitrage windows, demand-charge savings, round-trip efficiency, degradation, and stacked value across use cases. Feed these outputs into Lumen and into supply-side decisions.

4. Regulatory Intelligence:

- Track and interpret the state and central regulations that govern storage, open access and onsite - CERC and SERC tariff orders, open-access charges (wheeling, transmission, ASC/CSS, banking), energy storage obligations, ISTS waivers, and central/state incentive schemes (VGF, PLI).

5. Regulatory Modelling:

- Turn regulation into numbers - build and maintain technical models of open-access charge stacks, landed-tariff and savings-vs-DISCOM calculations, and the cost impact of new orders, keeping them current as regulations change.

6. Policy-to-Commercial Translation:

- Convert regulatory change into commercial impact - what a new order does to landed tariffs, storage viability, or pricing.

7. State Market Assessments & Reporting:

- Support market-entry decisions with state-by-state analysis of storage and open-access regimes, and build technical models and briefs that make storage economics and regulatory exposure visible to non-technical stakeholders.

8. Vendor & Techno-Commercial Evaluation:

- Evaluate OEM and vendor proposals on a Total Cost of Ownership basis, and support proposal teams with techno-commercial documentation. Keep an eye on the safety codes and standards (UL 9540, NFPA 855, IEEE) that shape what's deployable.

Skills & Qualities we're looking for

Qualifications:

- 1. 2 - 3 years in BESS design/estimation, energy analytics, power-sector consulting, regulatory research, or storage/RE project development.

- 2. Have prior experience at an energy consultancy, think tank, regulatory practice, IPP, EPC, or storage developer.

- 3. A Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, or Energy Systems Engineering - or an equivalent quantitative background with real energy exposure.

- 4. Working knowledge of BESS technologies and chemistries (Li-ion, LFP, NMC, flow) and battery sizing logic for real-world use cases.

- 5. Cost-modelling expertise in Excel and Python (or equivalent analytical tools); familiarity with simulation software such as HOMER, PVSyst, SAM, or MATLAB is a strong plus.

- 6. Strong knowledge of India's electricity market regulations: open access, tariff structures, IEX operations, and - critically - the regulatory framework governing storage and open access (CERC/SERC orders, charges, incentives).

- 7. Ability to read a regulatory order in-depth and extract the commercial implications to the business.

- 8. Comfort with messy, real-world energy datasets - cleaning, structuring, and extracting insight.

- 9. Extreme ownership - takes problems end-to-end without hand-holding.

- 10. The right attitude toward the sense of urgency, risk, and ambiguity that comes naturally with an early-stage startup.

Bonus Points if you:

- Have hands-on experience with utility-scale storage (> 10 MWh) or SECI/NTPC storage tenders.

- Have followed India's storage policy closely - ESO, VGF schemes, standalone storage tenders, ancillary services.

- Have a genuine passion for India's clean energy transition.
