Position: Senior Staff Engineer/Architect

Job Description :

- Core Storage group consists of the VMFS file system Group and the Protocols and Infrastructure group.

- VMware vSphere- VMFS is a high-performance cluster file system (CFS) that enables virtualization to scale beyond the boundaries of a single system. Designed, constructed and optimized for the virtual infrastructure, VMFS increases resource utilization by providing multiple virtual machines with shared access to a consolidated pool of clustered storage.

- To lead storage multipathing and failover, VMware ESX/ESXi uses a special VMkernel layer, Pluggable Storage Architecture (PSA). The PSA is an open modular framework that coordinates the simultaneous operation of multiple multipathing plugins (MPPs).

- The VSphere Core Storage team is looking for a senior engineer to support core storage infrastructure in VMware ESXi Kernel and contribute to Future proofing VMware ESX storage stack infrastructure. You will be part of the Core Storage Group, under the aegis of Storage and Availability Business Unit.

- The Sr Engineer will be responsible for architecture, design, maintenance and development of Core Storage Infrastructure pieces in ESX Kernel.

- You should be able to interact with multiple partners, architect complex pieces of software, work with senior leadership in defining product road map, serve as a mentor for the engineers, an industry through leader in defining the "next" for the Storage Infrastructure group.

Responsibilities:

- You would influence the design decision and implementation of next generation of storage architecture and build abstractions on top of it.

- You will assist in technically leading initial storage implementations including proof-of-concepts and pilots

- You are required to maintain deep technical and business knowledge of storage platform industry directions and trends

- Work collaboratively with Engineering and Product Management during the development, launch, and continuing refinement of VMware storage related technologies

- Document standard methodologies and architectural references in developing and deploying product solutions

- Experience resolving complex software defects, including reproducing problems based on written descriptions, applying relevant techniques to isolate root cause, tracing through large source code bases, and writing long-term fixes as well as short-term workarounds.

- Engineer will also collaborate with the Quality Engineers to ensure the quality of the developed products.

- Your role will include architecture, design, implementation, testing, and debugging.

Required Skill:

- BS/MS degree in Computer Science or equivalent.

- 15 + years of enterprise class software development experience

- Proven ability to lead complex development projects in the storage systems and technology domain

- Deep understanding of OS concepts and knowledge of UNIX kernel internals.

- Experience of system programming, analyzing kernel dumps or debugging OS crashes.

- Excellent CS fundamentals (OS concepts, algorithms, data structures).

- Strong debugging skills which will help build a robust system.

- Positive work attitude and excellent teamwork.

Preferred Skill:

- We would prefer 5+ years of experience of kernel programming on any UNIX system.

- Experience of working on file systems will be a plus.

- Knowledge of Storage products and protocols is a requirement.

- Familiarity with VMware products will be an advantage, not mandatory.

- Multiple years of hands on experience in coding and debugging on at least one of the Storage protocols [SCSI, FC, iSCSI, NVMe]
