Associate Legal Counsel-Manufacturing, Sourcing

Financial :

- Likely to control costs incurred in obtaining external advice when required on the interpretation of India regulation.

- The Associate Legal Counsel Manufacturing, Sourcing, South & East has primary responsibility for the provision of legal support to USL's sourcing function acting as the business partner for the USL Head of Sourcing and also supporting the operational matters in the South & East Regional Profit Centres along with the other members in this team.

- The Associate Counsel will lead engagement with in-house lawyers working for Diageo's Global Supply & Procurement on global sourcing and work closely with Diageo's Supply Scotland & Amsterdam to ensure effective management of Bottled in Origin and Bottled in India products.

Functional Support :

- The Associate Counsel is responsible for raising capabilities within the sourcing & RPC teams through training in the process of contracting, negotiating, compliance programmes relating to vendors and also support training on relevant policies and codes applicable to the sourcing team.

- Support the Senior Counsel in providing legal support for all operational matters within the South & East RPCs and to ensure consistence, work closely with the Senior Counsel supporting other RPCs.

- Leadership of programme of training to build knowledge and competency in negotiating & implementing contracts across the Sourcing functions and supporting similar programmes in the Manufacturing functions.

- Champion the embedding of a compliance culture within USL's Sourcing and Manufacturing Functions and East and South PRCs.

Leadership Responsibilities :

- Be an inspirational legal leader acting as a great coach to junior lawyers within the team and supporting all lawyers in the function and also cross-functionally in raising the capabilities and awareness of USL's functions.

- Being authentic - standing up for what you feel is right and important when put under pressure from colleagues in the sourcing function. Demonstrating high integrity and being honest and open at all times. Effectively building trusting relationships and motivating others to achieve common objectives.

- Being a solution generator - listening closely, thinking in the future, anticipating trends and opportunities, being imaginative in finding business solutions and driving opportunities; develops and applies a great understanding of the business and external environment and applying this knowledge to deliver great work product.

- Able to consistently deliver great performance through brilliant execution and being thorough and applying a high standard in everything you do. Understands the approvals matrix and governance required in your area.

- Demonstrates willingness to grow/ develop and capability and experience to receive and respond to feedback.

Purpose of Role :

- The Associate Legal Counsel Manufacturing, Sourcing, South & East has overall responsibility for the provision of excellent and pro-active legal support to the USL sourcing function and supporting the provision of legal advice to the USL manufacturing function as well as the South and East RPCs.

Top 3-5 Accountabilities :

- Primary responsibility for the provision of legal support to USL's procurement agenda acting as lead legal advisor to USL Head of Sourcing.

- Leadership of programme of training to build knowledge and competency and champion the compliance agenda and to empower the business.

- Responsibility for raising capabilities through training in the areas of the contracting and compliance for both employees and also vendors.

Qualifications and Experience Required :

- 7+ years Post Qualification Experience (PQE) Indian qualified or other common law jurisdiction. Experience of working outside India desirable but not essential (professional firm or FMCG company).

- High level of professionalism, integrity and commitment

- Good knowledge of and experience in drafting and negotiating contracts and supporting operational management of them

- Knowledge of international anti-bribery legislation (US and UK)

- Experience in business partnering to senior executives demonstrating the ability and desire to build high performing relationships, provide pro-active, pragmatic advice in furtherance of the business agenda

- Demonstrated ability to navigate in legal environments where laws can be unclear and judicial system not always robust

- Line management experience of mid and junior level lawyers and evidence of pro-active coaching and support to these employees is preferred though it can be developed in role

- Previous experience in effectively and efficiently managing legal budgets (especially external counsel spend)

- Excellent knowledge of Indian tax, labour and industrial law and its application to the USL Group.

Barriers to Success in Role :

- Inability to influence key stakeholders.

- Inability to manage time and prioritize effectively

- Inability to analyse complex data, draw connections and advocate a coherent strategy for improvement

- Viewing coaching as a low priority
