1. Position Summary: Plan and schedule daily production and preventive Maintenance, arrange for manpower and consumables, coordinate with various departments, train executives on day to day operations; develop team with succession planning with the objective of bringing out the newspaper every day, on time, at the best quality and with less supervision. 2. Job Size: Financial: - Production Budget for Delhi Rs. 70 crores. Non-Financial: - 160 team members (including Executives and Workmen). - 100000 MT of newsprint converted every year (more than 1.9 million newspapers every night). - Four press lines of MAN Roland, and Five lines of CTP (Computer to Plate). 3. Working Relationships: Frequent interactions (inside and outside the organization). a. Engineering - Daily - For New projects and persistent problems on press. b. Pre-press - 2 to 3 times a week - For discussing Picture quality, workflow related issues, errors in page make up or editorial defects. c. Response Scheduling - Weekly - To Plan for innovations, new products, print complaints. d. B & C Head - Weekly - For Newspaper, consumables supplies and quality issues e. RMD - Weekly - For resolving delivery issues with respect to print finish and shortage of copies f. Vendor - Monthly - For discussing Product quality issues, modifications / improvements in quality. 4. Areas of Responsibility: a. Cost reduction (15%): Direct and monitor the Continuous Improvement Groups (CIG) in the areas of newsprint and DVC in order to bring about cost reduction and improve production efficiency. - Achievement v/s. plan. - Getting awards for C.I.G. performance across all B.C.C.L. production centers (13 Centers) at "All India Production Meets". - Reduction in per page cost. - Reduction in newsprint waste b. Quality Tests (10%): Organize and supervise trials and tests on press and pre-press equipments in order to ensure the quality of performance of equipments as desired during production. - No quality complaints with respect to printing quality from customers. - Life of equipments and spares as per defined manufacturers' norms. - Process parameters as per directions set by IFRA. c. Vendor relations (10%): Analyze problems or issues with printing consumables (e.g. ink, plates, press room chemicals, etc.) and coordinate with the vendors in order to bring about corrective actions and reduce problems in production. - Number of printing defects (maintained on a daily basis by the quality committee) due to printing consumables. d. Product Innovations and Plan (10%): Plan with response department for new products / innovations in order to implement them in print and align it with the customer's requirement. - Customer Feedback from Response. - Number of innovations and new product launches. e. Production planning and control (30%): Plan for production, manpower, press availability, raw materials in order to ensure that the newspaper is brought out every day on time. - Adherence to stipulated timeline for printing. - Edition changeover time is limited within the norms set. - Capacity utilization - Adherence to Newspaper waste, Targets f. Special Projects (15%): Direct and guide the printing team in special projects like "INCQC (International Color Quality Club) Competition" held by IFRA, "Waste reduction", "Press Installation" in order to successfully implement the management objectives locally as well as across other centers. (Quality improvement in Pan India Basis) - Newsprint waste figures obtained at Delhi Vis a Vis production norms. - Marks obtained in "INCQC WAN-IFRA" competition. - Number of innovations initiated in Delhi that are implemented across other branches of B.C.C.L. g. Manpower development/ training (10%): Determine the training needs of the team members, liaison with training dept to facilitate training, mentor them in order to develop competency for the current and future role. - Feedback from team. - No. of team members covered in training. 5. Major Challenges: Challenges: - To bring out the newspaper on time @ 0400 hours even in cases of editorial delay in page release. - Bad quality of newsprint, ink and plates in certain batches leading to higher newsprint wastage figures and not able to meet the production norms. - Unavailability of newsprint and inks of different sizes and batches to give flexibility of scheduling across various machines or plants. Knowledge and skills: - Coordination and negotiation skills. - Communication skills w.r.t. quality and technical inputs. - Stock position monitoring - Knowledge of installation and commissioning imported press and pre press equipments - Ability to lead a highly skilled team of engineers and printing technologists 6.Decision Making Authority: Decisions Expected: - Production and manpower allocation in various machines or optimal usage of plant and machinery. - Changes in preventive maintenance activities depending on the usefulness of the activity. - Budget planning for spares and consumables required for the press and CTP. Recommendations Expected: - Increments for departmental staff. - Final budget figure approval. - Recruitment of manpower. 7. Education and Experience: - Bachelor of Engineering (Printing / Mechanical) with an M.B.A. (Operations / H.R.) - 15-20 years experience of working in a newspaper plant with a working knowledge of high speed web offset presses, and quality parameters as defined by IFRA.
