About Janaagraha:

Janaagraha is a non-profit trust, established in 2001, working towards the mission of transforming quality of life in India's cities and towns. It works with citizens to catalyse active citizenship in city neighbourhoods and with governments to institute reforms to city governance (what we call "City-Systems"). Janaagraha is part of the JANA Group - one of India's best-known groups of not-for-profit institutions working towards the mission of fixing India's cities. Swati Ramanathan and Ramesh Ramanathan co-founded Jana Group in 2001 and it presently works across citizen participation and city governance reforms (through Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy), city planning and design (through Jana Urban Space Foundation), banking and financial services for the urban poor (through Jana Small Finance Bank) and affordable housing for the urban poor (through Janaadhar).

Finance is a critical support for Janaagraha. This function is responsible for managing day to day accounting, compliance (financial and statutory), donor financial reporting, supporting budgeting, planning and monitoring for all the various projects undertaken by Janaagraha. The organization has adopted the key principles of fund based accounting system and currently the finance team is playing the role of a finance partner with all programs helping the teams to adapt to changes in the manner in which budgeting, planning and monitoring is conducted at program and organization level. We are looking for a highly passionate individual to be based out of Bangalore to manage Janaagraha's finance function.

What will the Manager Finance really do?

A. Accounting:

- Manage Janaagraha's finance function. Ensure proper accounting, keep in place effective controls and assist in governance with a view to protecting the credibility of the organisation.

- Making payments for designated projects, Admin expenses, employee pay-outs etc. after pre-audit and exercising internal checks.

- Accounting of the Transactions facilitating Fund-wise, Program-wise analysis of Projects and cost centre-wise analysis of overheads.

- Monitoring Capex and maintenance of Fixed Assets Register, including user & location tags.

- Carrying out periodical accounting checks e.g. Review of Vendor Accounts, Payroll Accounts for unpaid liabilities etc.

- Carrying out reconciliations of Bank accounts, GL Accounts, etc.

B. Compliance:

Ensure compliance with statutory requirements relevant to NGO operations in India, as specified by appropriate authorities from time to time and specifically assisting the Finance lead in the following:

- FCRA and domestic donations / contributions - Accounting for receipts under designated FCRA project or Common Pool account

- FCRA contributions, fixed deposits - Liaison with Banks & monitoring thereof

- FCRA contributions - Annual Returns (FC6)

- FCRA registration & renewals.

- TDS deductions - Monthly Remittances for Salaries, Contractors, Rent & Professional fee payments u/s 192, 194-C, 194-I, 194-J. Filing of E-Returns 24Q, 26Q etc.

- Income Tax Exemption certificate for non-deduction of tax on deposits

- Refund of TDS deductions - follow up with Income Tax Dept.

- Professional Tax - Monthly remittances & Monthly / Annual Returns

- Service Tax - payments & Returns

- Annual preparation of Balance Sheet and Income & Expenditure statements and filing the same with IT department / other authorities.

C. Governance & MIS:

- Assisting Program Heads in submitting utilisation statements to Donors for designated projects.

- Generation of MIS reports - Budget vs Actual Variance at Program and Organization level, R&P, I&E, Budgets for designated projects as well as Common Pool account based on the accounting entries, for submission to Management Committee and Program Heads

- Preparation and communication of Management Accounting information

- Vendor evaluation

D. Advisory:

- Working closely with the Management Committee and CEO to fulfil strategic goals of the finance function.

- Finalize annual organization plans (financial) and budgets, Analysis and Monitoring, exercising financial controls.

What competencies does it take to be Manager - Finance:

- Passionate about building robust systems for transparent and compliant internal accounting.

- Maturity, agility and flexibility to work with people/colleagues from diverse teams and senior management to meet the organisation's accounting & internal control needs.

- Strong quantitative and analytical capabilities.

- Flexible to the needs of the organisation without compromising on regulatory compliance

- Familiarity with accounting software and abreast with the laws, statutes and governance related issues.

- Good oral and written communication skills.

- Highly approachable and responsive to all cross functional teams

Qualifications and Experience:

- Chartered Accountant or Master's Degree in Financial and Business Management or Masters in Bachelor of Commerce or an equivalent degree

- About 5-10 years of relevant experience in Financial Management, Audit and Compliance

- Ability to manage teams and collaborate with cross functional teams to achieve objectives.
