Communication for Development Specialist - Mozambique

VSO is the world's leading independent international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries. VSO has extended its recruitment program to India through its partner iVolunteer Overseas (iVO). Volunteers recruited by VSO are placed in developing countries across Africa and Southeast Asia on a wide range of niche projects.

Role Overview:

The Ministry of Agriculture in Mozambique is implementing a project to support the National Programme of Agricultural Extension (the PRONEA Support Project). VSO Mozambique in partnership KULIMA (the organisation for integrated socio-economic development) is supporting the implementation of this PRONEA Support Project (PSP) through participatory communication strategy design and implementation to strengthen farmer organizations, private sector /NGO service providers governance and market integration.

VSO volunteers role and responsibilities will be:

- Develop a communication strategy specific for the target audience and area

- Organize professional training and coaching for extension agencies on communication for development approaches to improve knowledge sharing amongst extension officers and with producer organizations - through web-pages, radio/TV, videos, workshops, training sessions and study tours

- Prepare a simplified participatory communication strategy based on ground knowledge to support the dissemination of extension messages

- Facilitate and lead the design, production and distribution of communication materials specific for the target audience to enhance learning by marginalized actors and different market actors

- Report on a regular bases to your supervisors both at KULIMA and VSO country office

Skills, qualifications and experience required:

- Masters degree, or bachelor level degree with at least 10 year experience, in Journalism, Communication for Development, Marketing, Agricultural Education, Rural Extension or related field

- At least 5 years of experience in Communication Strategy Design and Implementation

- IT skills include Microsoft office and some experience with graphic and Multi-media design software.

- Project management skills are desirable, training and facilitation skills are essential

- Awareness and sensitivity of cross-cultural settings

- A preparedness to work with limited resources within a challenging environment

- Patience, tolerance and flexibility

- Ability to work independently

- Ability to maintain good working relationship

- Enthusiastic and good team player

This is a volunteer role with financial support by VSO. We support you by offering Home country funded allowance, medical insurance, travel costs, accommodation and an allowance to cover your basic living expenses while overseas according to the destination country.
