Head Development at Janaagraha About Janaagraha : Janaagraha is a non-profit trust, established in 2001, working towards the mission of transforming quality of life in India's cities and towns. It works with citizens to catalyse active citizenship in city neighbourhoods and with governments to institute reforms to city governance (what we call "City-Systems"). Janaagraha is part of the JANA Group - one of India's best-known groups of not-for-profit institutions working towards the mission of fixing India's cities. Swati Ramanathan and Ramesh Ramanathan co-founded Jana Group in 2001 and it presently works across citizen participation and city governance reforms (through Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy), city planning and design (through Jana Urban Space Foundation), banking and financial services for the urban poor (through Jana Small Finance Bank) and affordable housing for the urban poor (through Janaadhar). We are looking for a highly passionate, experienced and competent individual to lead Janaagraha's Development function. The Development function is primarily responsible for fundraising and philanthropic and corporate partnerships. What will Head - Fundraising & Development really do? A. Fundraising and Donor relationships : - Devise a long-term fundraising & development strategy to be approved by the CEO and senior leadership team, updated regularly as per short-term needs. - Build on Janaagraha's extensive past list and further identify cultivate and maintain key relationships with donor organizations of various types as per Janaagraha's sphere of interest, viz. Charitable Foundations, Family Trusts, Ultra HNIs, Institutional funders, Public Funding calls, Multilaterals, Bi-laterals, etc. - Build relationships with names in each category and their offices to explore long-term grant funding partnerships, and indeed short term or annual proposal calls, including attending networking events and meetings with potential donors. - Observe donor interests, evaluate strategic fitment with Janaagraha, align fitment with flagship programs, identify potential pitch and adapt different strategies to win the proposals / raise funds. - Develop opportunities into work by initiating conversations (internal-external), drafting proposals to finalizing contracts. - Prepare reports and give presentations on fundraising and development progress to CEO, senior leadership team and the trustee board. - Manage donor database and ensure the confidentiality of the donor information. - Manage Development team with necessary guidance, delegation and growth aspects. B. Program relationships : - Interact with program heads (PHs) to understand main thematic strands, and in particular help to write and/or approve winning project proposals / concept notes / grant applications in conjunction with Program Heads (for programmatic) and CEO (for institutional funding). - Meet proposal deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review, approval, and transmittal. - Interact with CEO and PHs to understand Government relations and MoUs or work proposed / already taken up on existing strengths and new requests. - Guide for research / lessons / publications on key areas of work converging with donor interests. - Develop new strategic opportunities, basis regular internal-external evaluation and research of trends within and outside existing sectors. - Identify opportunities for synergies between programs and other group entities for deeper impact. - Upon contract signing, plan resource allocation (re-assignment v/s. fresh hiring) basis internal growth needs and external supply. - Donor reporting as per Grant Agreement / PLF, for new work secured, with necessary audits and financials, and collation for internal audits & reporting C. Finance relationships : - Oversee and manage overall funds flow including institutional and programmatic. Achieve or exceed fundraising target, to ensure comfortable cash-flow situation. - Prepare, review and finalise donor related draft MoUs / Agreements / Contracts, for signatures. - Ensure FCRA, CSR and other institutional donor compliances. - Track and follow up for Grant payments, and related reporting obligations. Qualifications and Experience : - A Master's degree preferably in Development / Policy / Management. The higher degree is preferred, but can be relaxed for candidates with exceptional track record. - 15+ years in front-ending roles in the Social Development, Urban Development space. - 15+ years in front-ending roles in the Social Development, Urban Development space. - Excellent Knowledge of the donor eco-system particularly long term philanthropic funding. - Experience of fundraising, knowing proposal cycles and project life-cycles is critical. What competencies does it take to be Head - Development & Fundraising : - Networking & persuasion skills with donors (largely and in categories), governments and program heads. - Innovation skills to negotiate between focus / priorities of foundations, those of Janaagraha and those of government. - Effective management skills for team management, donor management and managing relationship with programs. - Excellent written and oral presentation skills. - Budget management skills to work effectively with available funding to deliver maximum impact. - Digital & Media skills.
