Though we have done a decent job of solving some complex engineering problems, we have only started building a proper structure to the team in the last 1 year. That's where the role of VP of Engineering has become critical. We are at a stage where we want someone to come in as the VP of Engineering and lay the groundwork for an excellent engineering team that works coherently to deliver excellent products. Responsibilities As the VP of Engineering, you will - Own the complete engineering team at HackerEarth and with your team to deliver reliable products that delight our customers. - Mentor and grow a management team that will methodically manage the large scope of engineering challenges within various sub-teams. - Interface with Product Management to define requirements, deliverables, and provide the necessary engineering expertise &amp; support to ensure on-time delivery of product - Propose, implement and enforce the right engineering practices. - Create, own and guard the engineering culture of the team. - Foster internally and share publicly a culture of engineering excellence - Continue to develop and improve delivery processes. Create an environment where the entire team is aligned to timely delivery of superior quality of products. - Be a technical owner of some of the key components of the infrastructure - Communicate progress and key decisions broadly within the organization - Be the champion of the engineering team, understand what motivates them and work with the management to create a workplace that they love - Be actively involved in recruitment and building out the engineering team. - Work closely with the founders to understand the vision/mission and translate that to engineering excellence - Help the Engineering Managers to understand to chart out career growth for all the engineers. - Be a problem fixer. Directly or through your managers resolve all issues that exist in the engineering team. - Be a stickler about testing - unit testing, system testing, regression testing etc. Desired Skills - To do justice to this role, you should have the following skills/experience - Prior experience of managing and growing engineering teams in the past - Hands-on technology person with sound and working knowledge of various tools and frameworks (Not expected to code daily, but up-to-date with the latest open source technologies and able to contribute to discussions) - Prior experience of being involved in building complex products that operate at scale with multi-dimensional complexities. - Prior experience of interfacing with Product, Marketing, and Sales teams. - Strong understanding of building scalable systems and performance optimization. - A keen eye for recognizing potential talent, hiring senior staff and providing inspiration and mentorship throughout the team. - Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and a strong sense of diplomacy in all interactions. - Ability to inspire and lead people - A keen sense of how engineers think and what motivates them. - Value people over the process but know how to scale an organization through light weight process and organizational design. - Should know how to estimate work units and come up with reasonable timelines. - Be able to effectively delegate tasks. - Ability to Multi-Task in an ambiguous and very dynamic startup environment.
