About the role

Reports to: Executive Director

The Deputy Director will work closely with the Executive Director and other colleagues on all aspects of programmatic strategy and related grantmaking specific to the Industry programme. Our Industry programme seeks to ensure that people everywhere have access to materials like steel, cement etc., and infrastructure without harming the climate. She/He is expected to apply her/his expertise in climate change and energy policy to the implementation of grantmaking strategies.

In this role, the Deputy Director is called upon to deliver under pressure, and consistently produce high-quality work; build effective peer relationships throughout the organisation's network; anticipate potential issues and propose solutions; offer assistance and service to team members; and present ideas for improvement and be able to execute the improvements. We aim to support a coalition of advocates, researchers, businesses and other stakeholders who are working together to transform the material economy. This is a full-time role based in India.

Key responsibilities

- Support the Executive Director with overall programme management, including budgeting, planning, reporting, development, and strategy;

- Work with the Executive Director to support the organisation's industry grants portfolio and see the grants through to completion of the approval process;

- Keep abreast of current events, developments and issues in the field, including through continued engagement with partners and the wider network, to maintain a balanced and objective perspective and approach to grantmaking;

- Coordinate capacity building / technical assistance and programmatic opportunities for grantees;

- Provide support as needed for reports, proposals and presentations; and run an information management strategy to help the organisation's staff keep current on the changing landscape;

- Follow up and review renewals, proposals, due diligence, contracts, reports and other grantee/ consultant deliverables;

- Support the programme team to manage the programme budget, maintain the grants management system, and interface with operations.

Experiences and competencies

- Master's degree and having experience of working in an organization focused on climate and energy issues, specifically around heavy industries.

- Previous operations and project management experience is preferable.

- Expertise in clean energy transition, energy policies, energy finance, or clean air/water initiatives is also preferable.

- Able to make effective connections among research, policy and practice and to work productively with civil society groups, academic institutions and other foundations.

- Must have working knowledge of relevant government policies and programmes in India.

- Excellent analytical and communications skills.

- Self-confident, collegial, and diplomatic, with an appreciation of the role of a grantmaking institution.

- High levels of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and any productivity tools.

- Other skills: Needless to say, must be a team player; able to organize and convey problems and issues clearly and succinctly; maintain openness to people with diverse views; and a talent for using initiative and managing time and priorities effectively.
