Role Title: Department Manager
Reports To: ERC Director
Department: Engineering and Research Centre (ERC)
Job Family: Research & Technology Development
Role Purpose - To lead and manage the people, portfolio, processes and financials of a department.
Key Accountabilities:
Key Activities/Decision Areas:
Business and Financial Management:
- To contribute to the development of the long, mid and short-term strategy as member of the management.
- To actively build and maintain the internal customer and stakeholder base.
- To take active responsibility for technology research and development projects.
- To manage R&D programme planning.
- To manage the department budget, to manage the cost and effectiveness of associated R&D activities to optimize resources, to prioritize spending and to maintain professional standards, taking the ERC perspective.
- To take on special assignments.
Technology Management:
- To secure the required level of scientific and technical expertise.
- To advise the Director ERC on appropriate short, mid and long-term investments in research and technology development in competence areas.
- To actively drive innovation across the organization.
- To maintain a network with external bodies for technology sourcing.
- To manage Company Technology competitive advantage through IP.
- To drive structured knowledge transfer to the Divisions.
- To support technology leadership image in the market.
Project role:
- To manage the delivery of projects according to customer expectations.
- To plan own work.
Research & Knowledge:
- To identify potential professional profiles that could be needed to enhance the efficiency and quality of the scientific output of the department.
- To have good understanding of the technology relevant for Company within context of the department.
- To have very good understanding of the various competence areas within ERC and the Technology Clusters.
- To have good knowledge of the Company organization and to have a recognized position in the company organization.
- To have excellent organizational awareness.
- To have a good internal ERC network.
Operations Management:
- To allocate resources in case of disruptions at the internal or external client to solve these problems.
- To allocate responsibilities within the department for special assignments.
- To plan, organize, manage and monitor the overall department workflow.
- To take shared responsibility for yearly improvement plans as member of the Quality Board.
People Management:
- To actively coach, develop, evaluate and reward the department- s members to enhance their individual and overall engagement, development, growth and performance. I.e.:
- To perform operational review with the (Operational) Team leader based on the performance objectives;
- To appraise the team members based on the written summary of the (Operational) Team leader, taking his/her advice into account;
- To develop and propose the performance objectives and expectations for the (Operational) Team leader for the following year;
- To finalize, together with the (Operational) Team leader, the performance objectives and expectations for the team members for the following year;
- To finalize, together with the (Operational) Team leader, the Individual Development Plan for the team members for the following year.
- To foster innovation and collaboration across the organization.
- To drive and motivate department employees to follow and stay abreast of (new) technology developments and innovation.
- To be proficient in active listening.
- To drive company vision and strategy implementation of desired people and culture behavior.
- To support the employees personal development and professional objectives.
- To drive performance of the department members.
- To act as a change agent.
- To provide and seek constructive feedback.
Process:
- To ensure that EHS (environment, health and safety) regulations and guidelines are observed.
- To take appropriate actions to maintain and improve the working environment and working practices.
- To ensure that ISO 9001, COMPANY internal quality systems and other applicable standards are followed.
- To apply Project Management according to ERC PMO.

Person Specification;
Education: Masters in Engineering, MSc or PhD
Experience:5-10 years managerial experience
Other/Certification: GPM certification, knowledge of Six Sigma
