Who are we? Centre for Urban Innovation (CUI) is a independent non-profit think and do tank based in New York and Mumbai. CUIs mission is to make urbanization in developing countries more vibrant, productive and sustainable for its residents, the economy and the environment. CUI will focus on a wide range of interventions - from fundamental innovation to applied research- to achieve these goals. CUI will combine forward thinking urban design and planning principles with new technology to help create people-centred neighbourhoods &amp; cities that achieve precedent setting levels of sustainability, affordability, mobility and economic opportunity. CUI will define innovation as the application of new or more effective solutions. In this context solutions would encompass products, services, processes, technologies, business models and policies that meet- new requirements, unarticulated needs and or existing needs of urban development. CUI's Innovation team will bring together designers, researchers, and strategists with backgrounds that span - urban design, planning, public policy, mobility, sustainability, governance, economics, community engagement, arts and culture and creative technology development. Team members will share a commitment to urban innovation while having diverse backgrounds and expertise. This work is ideal for someone who is passionate about the future of cities and wants to be part of a team focused on how innovation will shape that future. CUI is fully funded and sponsored for the first 3 years by the Lodha Group, thereafter it is intended that CUI will diversify its donor/sponsor base. During the inception years (0-3 years) the centres solutioning work will focus on the urban development needs of India, with focus on developments &gt; 10 million sft BUA / 100 acres - in 2018-19. In year-1 the centre will deep partner with its primary sponsor (the Lodha group) to implement innovations in its 4 identified developments - Palava city (4500 acre new township), Upper Thane Township (a 600 acre new township), Amara (a 120 acre development) and Lodha Belmondo (130 acre development). From Year 2 onwards, CUI will also consider working closely with urban governments in India who have a track record of impactful implementation and are forward looking. From year 4 onwards, CUI will evaluate expanding these services to urban governments globally. What is the role? At CUI we believe that a thriving public realm, high quality open spaces, lively and safe streets and a thoughtful built environment are hallmarks of a healthy, liveable, world-class city. We understand that proactive and well thought out urban planning initiatives can help cities conceptualize, develop and implement better growth management while building on the city's public realm to elevate the quality of life of all citizens. We know that developing effective planning strategies needs close collaboration and coordination between policy makers, public agencies, real estate developers, urban planning professionals, industry leaders, civil sector partners, community organizations and stakeholders. The role of the Associate Director, Urban Planning Solutions, is to take independent charge of this vertical and be responsible for the development and execution of a urban planning strategy and roadmap. The AD will identify, develop and implement urban planning and urban design initiatives to support and enhance the long term vitality and resilience of cities. To conduct this research and development work CUI will partner with academic institutes, research scholars, think tanks, other non-profit partners, community stakeholders, industry partners and practitioners. CUI will sponsor research and ideation through prizes, scholarships and competitions to have access to leading experts and cutting edge thinking in the areas of focus. What you need to be successful? Vision and expertise: You are recognized by others in the field as a leading thinker, doer, and peer in urban design and planning. You know how urban planning values and goals intersect with urban economics, politics, and policy. Critically, you also understand the potential for change and how that might occur. Urban values: You understand that urban planning exists to make urban life better for all people who live in cities. You understand that city's need to embrace new technology and emerging economic models while driving the agenda for more sustainable, equitable and liveable communities. You understand that cities have been playing catch up to technological disruptions for centuries, but you are also eager to see change when it means improvement. Technical expertise: You have experience developing new urban design &amp; planning project proposals and providing strong design direction on projects. You possess strong research, writing and presentation skills, excellent conceptual design skills with land use and physical planning experience, experience in developing zoning recommendations, overlay zoning plans and curiosity to explore and try out new professional methods and tools. You have excellent organizational and communication skills and the ability to produce high quality work products as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Product &amp; business acumen: You have demonstrated expertise in developing, implementing and administering urban planning work. You have experience planning greenfield and brownfield developments, transit oriented developments, neighbourhood revitalization strategies, comprehensive and small area plans and site scale master planning. You are comfortable with large group facilitation, public presentation and community engagement work. Track record of execution and impact: You are a highly-motivated, self-directed creative planner who has initiated, developed and implemented many urban planning projects. You know how hard it is, how many compromises and priorities must be made, how many stakeholders are involved, and the way that the realities of urban environments intrude on great plans. Strong collaborator: You have managed complex projects with many internal and external stakeholders and have supported senior leaders. You- re able to think through, communicate, and develop next steps for your team and the organization. Qualifications : Minimum qualification: An advanced degree in city planning, urban design or related field and minimum of 8 plus years of progressive professional planning experience in leading, managing and implementing complex urban planning and urban design projects. A mix of private sector and public sector experience is preferred but not necessary.
