Vice President - Data Science & Engineering

CARS24 has a robust Core Data ecosystem spread across Data Science, ML Engg / Ops and Data Engineering modules, working on business-critical problem statements across Pricing algorithms, Recommendation Engines, Fraud models, Auctioning strategies, Automated damage detection, inhouse deep capabilities across Computer Vision, Gen-AI and cutting-edge open source data storage, pipelining & compute infrastructure.

Core Data team is ~35 members strong being led by experienced (12+ years of relevant experience) module leads and rapidly growing as we now push for deeper automation & digitization across the organisation.

VP - DS & Data Engineer will be leading this team working closely with the heads of business, product, marketing and tech leaders and reporting into Vikram Chopra, CEO & Cofounder.

In addition to the horizontal Core Data team, there are ~100 more analysts / data professionals who are mapped to business, marketing & product stakeholders, working in deep collaboration with the Core Data team.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

- This is a leadership role responsible for the development and continuous enhancement of the technologies and solutions cutting across data science, data / ML engineering and advanced analytics at CARS24.

As Vice President, DS & Data Engineer you are expected to :

- Partner with senior business, product, and engineering leaders to develop strategic goals and direction needed to continuously enhance the company's technology & data platforms.

- Be a technical leader for the data science team, helping institute best engineering practices (coding standards, automated testing, scalability) and growing the technical capabilities of the team.

- Ensure best practices and play a critical role in building a data-driven culture throughout the entire organization.

- Partner with the product leadership team to create a long-term vision and develop a roadmap of data science projects.

- Conceive, develop, implement, and continually improve machine learning projects.

- Build and lead a high-performing team of data scientists, ML & data engineers helping to enhance their skills, while creating a fun and engaging culture that helps them prosper.

- Foster career growth and provide thoughtful mentorship to develop employees at varying levels of experience. Establish a clear vision and mission for the data science department.

- Work with cross-functional partners and executives in product, business, tech, operations, finance, and marketing to define and achieve business goals, and to build data-informed business strategy and roadmaps.

- Serve as a champion for data science and informed decision-making at all levels of the company.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:

- Exceptional strategic thinking, problem-solving abilities, and a track record of driving impactful business outcomes through data-driven decision-making.

- Proven leadership experience in a senior data science or machine learning role, leading a team of at least 15 or more data scientists.

- Tier 1 undergraduate in Eng, Stats or related field.

- Advanced degree (Ph.D. or Master's) in CS, Math / Stats, or a related - eld is preferred.

- Minimum 15+ years of relevant experience

- Recent 3-4 years of experience in a tech startup is preferred.

- Deep proficiency in core analytics / DS concepts - advanced statistical knowledge and languages such as Python, R / SAS, advanced SQL etc

- Good understanding of scalable data infrastructure - exposure to real time pipelines / integrations (Kafka, Spark, airbyte etc) , open data lakehouse format / data warehousing solutions (doris, clickhouse, iceberg, delta etc) , ML Infra (PubSub / RMQ, Kubernetes deployments, feature store / inference engine etc).

- Prior exposure in rolling out and maintaining data privacy, governance and access controls at organization level.

- Basic understanding of concepts around deep learning / neural networks and more recent advancements in GPT & LLMs.

- International businesses (COO & Cofounder Mehul , Abhinav Gupta, Olya Rudenko, Abhijeet Dabas) and will be reporting into Vikram Chopra, CEO & Cofounder.

- Your team will include strong DS/ML leads like Shashank Kumar, Pankaj Porwal, Abhay Kansal, Sachin Maskeen, Atish Jain, Paridhi Choudhary & more.
