Group Entity: Global Banking and Markets, HDPI Role Profile Date:   Role Title Center of Excellence Lead -   Vice President (GCB 4) GHRS Job Code:   Business/Function & Location:  (Country/Department) Credit Analysis Unit, Global Banking and Markets Service Centre, HDPI Kolkata   Role Purpose   - Credit Analysis Unit ("CAU") is a global function which works closely with Relationship Managers (RMs) to help them prepare Credit Proposals for their GB&M borrowing names across the FIG, Corporate and FIG Funds sectors. By closely managing the annual review work load and encouraging deep collaboration between CAU, RMs, Credit Risk, and Client Management, the Credit Analysis Unit maintains a flexible operating model ensuring new business transactions are consistently prioritized effectively to exploit revenue generation.   - CAU's vision is to consistently deliver superior quality of credit risk analysis and to be the best place of work fostering a team of highly engaged members who are committed to HSBC Values and Global Standards.   - Globally, CAU teams currently support coverage teams in 32 countries; the Offshore CAU team comprises ~250 staff operating out of 3 locations (Bangalore, Kolkata and Guangzhou), supporting RMs in 16 countries.  - The Offshore CAU is setting up a Centre of Excellence ("COE") team for the first time in order to create a dedicated team of SMEs in order to drive and instil best practices with regards to credit analysis produced by Offshore CAU and to play a pivotal role in leading some of the key transformation initiatives including Credit Streamlining and the RWA Accuracy Program.  - CAU is seeking an ambitious individual in the role of a Vice President to lead the COE team (up to 10 direct staff) and also double-hat as a deputy CAU Kolkata site lead (~80 staff).  - The role holder is expected to ensure the delivery of high quality CAU work - primarily to coverage teams, but also, by extension, Risk teams throughout locations supported by the CAU offshore teams.  Principal Accountabilities: Key activities and decision making areas  Impact on the Business/Function  Ensure consistent and high quality credit analysis output  - The primary function of the COE will be to review and recommend changes to the output of the analysts draft write-ups from the various sector coverage teams prior to submission to the RMs or WMR in order to ensure high quality credit analysis and accuracy.  - Ensure the credit submissions are consistent with the approved guidelines as stipulated in the corresponding FIM/DIMs and approved templates.  - Provide both quantitative and qualitative feedback via a scorecard to each analyst submission that will become part of their performance scoring assessment, as well as direct 1:1 feedback as required.  - In the same line, closely monitor the feedback on the credit submission as provided by the RMs/WMR via TVOBs and adopt any lessons learned or address any data findings or inconsistencies.  - Be closely integrated with the sector coverage teams to ensure CAU deliverables and timelines with regards to T-45 submission timelines and target KPIs are met, as well as support for new business opportunities.  - Play a pivotal role in the on-going Credit Streamlining roll-out by ensuring that the approved templates are adhered to and that the write-ups succinctly capture the key risks, mitigants and supporting analysis from a risk perspective (- writing for risk- ).  - Proactively seek out opportunities to support the RWA accuracy program in identifying data and or model inconsistencies, which could impact the corresponding reporting of RWA.  - This role will also have a dotted line into the CAU Global Head of Implementation and Transformation in order to be abreast with any credit policy changes or initiative roll-outs for consistent adoption across offshore CAU.  Continually drive best practices and build subject matter expertise  - The COE should maintain high standards and be a role model to the analysts in terms of best practices with regards to all aspects of credit analysis.  - Individuals in the COE team should groom analysts and provide value-added feedback to enable them to reach their full potential and maximize the quality of output.  - Be well integrated with the management layer of sector coverage teams to ensure overall CAU deliverables are met.  - Given the high level visibility across all sectors, the COE team is expected to encourage constant knowledge building and participate in thematic reviews, industry overviews and trends to support the credit assessments.  Training and mentoring  - The COE will play an active role in supplementing any sector specific training or credit analysis tools to the sector analysts in order to maintain a high quality of skill sets.  - Participate in the independent panel reviews for promotions and progressions of CAU staff.  - Represent CAU in various GSC forums to highlight key capabilities and achievements.  - The role holder will oversee the COE staff including managing their deliverables, performance management and career counselling, in line with HSBC performance management standards.  Customers / Stakeholders  - Maintain a good relationship with CAU regional heads, WMR and/or RM stakeholders where necessary in order to ensure high quality service and deliver on key CAU initiatives.  - Represent CAU in various mancoms, regional meetings and strategic planning.  - To align and be integrated with the offshore CAU sector heads, demonstrate strong team work and take ownership of appropriate initiatives.  Leadership & Teamwork   - Drive interaction with the wider offshore CAU analyst layer and regional heads within an appropriate support and engagement model for the successful execution of the key CAU initiatives.  - Work effectively with sector and regional heads and other GSC partners. Act as a point of escalation for all matters relating to quality of work produced by offshore teams.  - To attract, lead and retain a team of COE SMEs to become sector experts, drive the best practices with regards to credit analysis, and are proficient in financial analysis / modelling capabilities.  - Develop and harness the team's capability to drive the broader upskilling and mentoring of the analyst layer.   Operational Effectiveness & Control  - Demonstrate strong orientation towards risk and controls; play a key role in implementation/smooth bedding down of initiatives from a Global Standards perspective   - Manage elements of Operational Risk; foster a culture of compliance amongst the team members as regards Group Compliance Policy   - Suggest process improvements and sustainable saves that will contribute to overall effectiveness  - Understand and comply with all relevant policies and procedures issued by the Group and contained within the Group Standards Manual and relevant Functional Instruction Manuals, Desk Instruction Books and Process Guidelines  Broad KPIs: No breaches attributed in the year; positive feedback from BRCM and Audit reviews  Major Challenges (The challenges inherent in the role that require a continual test of the role holder's abilities)  - Large junior layer coupled with a thin SME layer both of which need to be built out through effective training and mentoring in order to build the overall credit analysis capabilities in the offshore CAU team.  - Increasing demands from stakeholders and regulators for new requirements / new country rollouts/migrations and hence the need to build an agile workforce to adapt well to the changing need.  - Silo- d sector-based workforce which does not leave much flexibility to address volume lumpiness and hence the need to build a cross-sector fungible workforce with appropriate succession planning.  - Aggressively adapting the new initiatives including credit streamlining where the mindset of the analyst layer needs to be changed to writing for risk in a very crisp and concise style.  - Process or workflow inefficiencies which need to be addressed in order to create more capacity in the team.  Headcount reporting to this role Direct: 5-10 Indirect: 70 Total: 75-85  Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications (For the role - not the role holder. Minimum requirements of the role.)  Knowledge & Experience:  - Strong Credit product and varied industry knowledge with a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience in Corporate Banking, Research and/or Risk management. Candidates with a track record in risk approvals or credit portfolio management are preferred.  - Post Graduation in Management, Finance, Economics or equivalent such as a Chartered Accountant would be preferred.
