Dmart is owned by Avenue Supermarts Pvt Ltd. An unlisted privately held company, it is owned by Radhakishan Damani. An iconic personality who has gained immense respect in the financial markets over the last 25 years for his value investing ways and business practices. Mr Damani started Dmart in 2000. He was actively involved in the initial setup and continued to be involved in the business till 2004. During this period he spent good time understanding the assortment, type of people and processes needed and the overall cost and business dynamics of the industry. He did not believe in the mad rush of adding stores without profitability and hence Dmart had just 7 stores till 2004 and . While the model was being perfected he also built a strong leadership team who could grow the business when it was fiscally ready. Most of his hires were people he met and interacted as a retailer during the period of 2000-2004. On of them was Neville Noronha who at that time was the Key Account Manager of HUL. Neville along with his team has built Dmart to its current size over the last 10 years. Today Dmart has 75 stores, operates in 16 cities across 4 states and delivered 4800 crores turnover for 2013-14. Dmart has always been profitable since inception, every single year. They are now the third largest retailer in the country by top line.
