Job Description:   American Express has been in existence for 160 years servicing its customers with integrity, trust, security, and quality. Today, these attributes still form the foundation of our American Express brand. Global Servicing Network (GSN) is responsible for end-to-end management of credit, collections, and fraud operations. The primary focus is to protect and recover American Express- receivable assets, while delivering on our customer commitment.   Commercial Underwriting is one of the business units within Credit Operations which serves as a vital component of GSN. This team works to develop spend enablement, or limit exposure through effective risk mitigation, to prevent spending that will not be paid back - while building upon the customer's relationship with American Express. The Director of Underwriting will be responsible for an operations team that conducts in-depth credit analysis and underwriting decisions on small and medium-sized entities that have or request credit exposure with American Express.   The incumbent will manage multiple teams that conduct in-depth analysis of business, and personal financials, industry and country risk coupled with support from internal and external model outputs, as well as a review of consumer and company risk-related metrics. Fundamental assessment includes understanding of the need for credit extension, determining Amex charge volume opportunity, historical program performance and behaviors, profitability of the relationship and program structures. The portfolio covers a range of credit types. The emphasis is on OPEN (small business customers), GMS (Global Merchant Services) and GCP (Global Corporate payments), but also includes review of Personal and International cards.   Primary duties include the following:   - Lead a team of multiple leaders and their staff in a complex operating environment   - Develop and/or implement effective strategies that drive improvements to decision quality, compliance, production, operational risk and system capabilities   - Work effectively in a highly matrixed organization, including Risk, Rating Unit, the Bank, Client Management, and Compliance   - Lead effective monitoring of underwriting and financial decisions and processes including quality control processes   - Leverage MIS and exception reporting   - Undertake financials based underwriting decision leveraging profit and loss, cash flow, balance sheet analysis, bank statements, and other financial documents   - Handle customer escalations, and provide detailed responses to senior executives and other business partners.   Offer of employment with American Express is conditioned upon the successful completion of a background verification check, subject to applicable laws and regulations.   Qualifications:   - Overall 10+ years of experience including 5+ years experience in commercial underwriting or other similar analytical functions within Credit Risk Management space   - 5+ years experience directly leading teams of 10 or more members   - Working knowledge of Risk Analyst and risk rating capability   - Demonstrated skills providing coaching, feedback, and development of Team Leaders, skilled Underwriters and other production/analytic staff   - Ability to work in a dynamic, fast changing environment with evolving priorities   - Commercial lending or financials based underwriting experience in major banking institutions through the evaluation of business and personal financial statements and tax documents is essential   - Demonstrated analytical problem solving and ability to perform data analysis independently   - Strong communication skills, both verbal and written   - Proven ability to build high level relationships with business partners and executives   - Demonstrated track record of integrity, innovation, and excellence   - Preferably an MBA or Bachelor's Degree required.   - Ideal candidate will have already led other people leaders, especially in a centralized operations environment  #NOLI
