Business Context and Main Purpose of the Job :

The Engineering Manager has responsibility for managing and developing multiple technical solutions located in multiple locations. The key technical skills are described in the Key Skills section below.

- The role will require you to recruit, manage and develop multiple teams of technical specialists across different technical domains and spanning multiple locations. It will require close cooperation with peer Engineering Managers to coordinate and manage work load, and the span of control would typically be between 5 and 15 direct reports.

- Overall job responsibility is to manage those teams effectively in order to provide IT engineering oversight to ensure Unilever infrastructure services are effective and fit for purpose, now and in the future. This role has an active involvement in working collaboratively and effectively with other Unilever IT groups, including the Enterprise Architecture, Capability and Estate & Environments Teams, and 3rd part suppliers (e.g. HCL, IBM- ) to create forward plans for the ongoing development and enhancement of the IT environments underpinning Unilever critical business services, across on-premise and cloud.

Main Accountabilities :

In this role your responsibilities will include :

- Ensure that roadmap and architecture building blocks are fit for purpose and meet business requirements. Look to standardise where appropriate, and create a catalogue of technical standard building blocks in close cooperation with the Capability Team. Ensure those building blocks are fully tested and developed, documented and embedded with the operational support and project build teams.

- Drive optimisation of the relevant technology estate in close cooperation with the Estate Management Team, in terms of availability, performance, total cost, right sizing and flexibility.

- Support the Estate Management Team through the creation of automated reports and dashboards as well as the implementation of chosen toolsets, in order to provide the right inventory, capacity and performance information, enabling effective control and decision making to manage and optimise the environment.

- Maintain and support the creation and maintenance of life cycle and baseline management standards and plans. Provide technical assistance to the Environment Team to drive their implementation in order to keep the environment current and relevant.

- Assist the Service Operations Team to review tactical remedial actions to maintain performance at the agreed levels for Incidents, Problems and Requests.

- Provide - break glass- fourth line support in response to requests from the Service Operations Team for assistance.

- Protect the environment by identifying technical risks to ensure resilience, and formulate mitigation and remediation plans. Provide technical assistance to implement such plans in close cooperation with the Estate & Environment Teams.

- Develop roadmaps for the teams, highlighting any new technology/software/ tools that would bring a benefit to the company and document any dependencies. Develop the relevant business case for such changes in close cooperation with the Capability and Estate & Environment Teams as well as the Procurement and Finance Teams.

Also :

- Manage the performance of their team(s), identify any shortcomings, propose and implement changes to improve individual and team performance.

- Manage team(s) performance against agreed Key Performance Indicators/targets and ensure teams are aware of their own performance and that of other teams within Enterprise Computing thus holding them to account.

- Plan the resources, skills and the activities of their teams in the light of anticipated customer demands and projects to ensure sufficient resources and skills are available, taking into account holidays, training, sickness, and ensure that customer priorities are met.

- Advise the Leadership Team of any perceived shortfalls, current or anticipated, in their teams, in the areas of resource or skills levels.

- Monitor the performance and characteristics of standard technical building blocks, and make any necessary adjustments so as to improve their efficiency and effectiveness.

- Work closely with the Environment Teams to ensure that maintenance and upgrades to the systems are implemented in line with agreed plans and timetables, whilst maintaining the agreed levels of service to customers.

- Set, maintain and communicate agreed technical standards relating to the systems.

- Manage the relevant level of system security to ensure full compliance with the current Unilever Security Policies.

- Review the performance of problem resolution activities by Operational teams to ensure that they are technically valid.

- Attend regular service improvement reviews with 3rd party vendors, ensuring actions arising are progressed and to highlight areas of concern.

- Maintain a view on industry trends and work with Enterprise Architecture, Capability and Estate Management Teams to review how these can be used within the technology domain to increase effectiveness.

- Continually review ways of working and identify improvements to increase team's agility and speed of delivery.

- Drive continual service improvement and problem management to ensure that supported platforms are stable and efficient.
