Tata Trusts - Swachh Bharat Prerak Programme

A joint initiative of Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation and Tata Trusts

The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation [nodal ministry for the Swachh Bharat Mission] and Tata Trusts, recently announced the launch of the Zila Swachh Bharat Prerak programme [ZSBP]. The programme will place 1 innovative young professional in every district of India to implement the Swachh Bharat Mission [Rural], which aims to eliminate Open Defecation in India.

About the programme :

The 'Preraks' will be directly working, for a period of 1 year, with the District Collector and assist her/him in Coordination with State Government and Central Ministry

- The Preraks will work directly with the District Collector and will provide technical and management support to these districts for becoming Open Defecation Free (ODF).

- Planning and implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission in the entire District

- Overall monitoring of the programme

- The placement will be done in 3 phases [End February 2017, End March 2017 and Mid-April 2017]

- In addition to the wider benefits of engaging smart minds in the Mission, this will also ensure a structured integration of the youth in the programme and bring in fresh ideas, energy and enthusiasm to the Mission, and help accelerate the path to an ODF India.

- Do I need to be an experienced professional in the social development sector to apply

- That is not necessary. We encourage young professionals from varied backgrounds to apply.

- Will I be placed in any of the metro cities/tier 1 cities as desired-

- This initiative is specially being undertaken for Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin [rural], and therefore requirements are for districts across India,focusing on rural India and not just the Tier 1 cities. However, we will keep your state preference in mind during final placement.

- Will I be given some training before deployment at the district level-

- Yes, the Ministry of drinking water and sanitation in conjunction with the Tata Trusts will be conducting a 3 day training, which will be held in batches and convened at regular intervals.

What is the genesis of this program :

- To accelerate the efforts to achieve universal sanitation coverage and to put focus on sanitation, the Prime Minister of India launched the Swachh Bharat Mission on 2ndOctober, 2014. Prime Minister Modi, during his Mann Ki Baat address on 25th September 2016, highlighted the government's appeal to the corporate world to sponsor young professionals, who would work at the District level for Swachh Bharat Mission [Gramin].

- In view of the above, Tata Trusts and Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation launched the Zila Swachh Bharat Prerak [ZSBP] initiative. The initiative will place around 600 - young professionals in each district of the country to give a boost to the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The initiative, aimed at nurturing Zila Swachh Bharat Preraks for every district in India, is a first of its kind partnership between a philanthropic organization and Government of India to effect change at this scale
