EDF - Senior Director - Climate &amp; Energy Program - India Organization: ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND Job Title: SENIOR DIRECTOR, INDIA - CLIMATE &amp; ENERGY PROGRAM Reports to: VICE PRESIDENT FOR INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE Location: DELHI Introduction: With world attention focused on building both a strong economy and a healthy environment, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is where policymakers and leaders from business and civil society turn for win-win solutions. This leading green group, with a growing global presence, has tripled in size over the past decade by focusing on strong science, uncommon partnerships, and policy solutions that harness the power of markets and economic incentives. For decades EDF has leveraged its economic, scientific and political expertise to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, China, and around the world. With its growing economy and population and rising global influence, India has become central to meeting these global challenges. EDF- S WORK IN INDIA Since 2009, EDF has been working on the ground in India alongside partners to spur low-carbon rural development and, more recently, working to improve air quality. In both areas, EDF sees opportunities to help the Indian government address national priorities for economic development, rural poverty alleviation, and (increasingly) better air quality and public health. By providing families across India access to low-carbon energy, cooking and farming techniques, EDF aims to demonstrate how reducing greenhouse gas emissions can drive inclusive growth and rural economic development - creating a vision for how rural India can participate in and benefit from a low-carbon future. The organization and its partners have developed an innovative app for smart phones that help provide rural farmers with access to farm inputs, machinery, customized extension services, and market related information. To date, EDF and its partners have delivered clean cookstoves and training on climate-smart farming to a quarter of a million households in eight states across India. The next step is to scale up this initiative more intensively in two states, with the objective of informing national development policies and investments. In addition, the organization is facilitating a series of roundtable discussions with thought leaders from Indian, NGOs, businesses, and academia to explore the various instruments and policies that may be used for a potential national, economy-wide greenhouse gas mitigation effort. On air quality, EDF, in partnership with a government-affiliated institution, is creating a comprehensive web-based repository of research and analysis on air pollution by Indian scientists, including by making many studies available online for the first time. Credible, indigenous science and data on air pollution is essential to shift public opinion and catalyze government action. A key finding of their recent scoping study was that a wealth of such evidence already exists, but is not widely recognized. Reason for Hire: EDF is looking to hire a dynamic, entrepreneurial, and visionary leader as Senior Director, India for the Climate &amp; Energy Program. This is a new position in the organization. The incumbent will establish and grow an EDF presence in India focusing on India's unique priorities and opportunities while also drawing strength from EDF's overarching vision, experience, and global reach. The Senior Director will have the opportunity to help drive transformational change in India that will improve air quality for hundreds of millions of people and alter the trajectory of future carbon emissions on a global scale. Roles and Responsibilities: - Develop, articulate, and implement an expanded strategy for EDF to contribute to cleaner air, inclusive rural development, low-carbon prosperity, and a better quality of life throughout India, in line with the global strategies. - Supervise program staff responsible for executing EDF's strategy in India. - Establish a formal presence in India including overseeing the legal registration process, locating and securing office space in Delhi, and hiring and managing a core office staff. - Cultivate a network of influential individuals in India from business, academia, scientific organizations, philanthropy, the media, and civil society, who can act as partners, advisers, and ambassadors for EDF's growing work in India. - Develop and sustain partnerships with key Indian institutions including universities, think tanks, and other NGOs. - Raise EDF's profile within India including through public communication and thought leadership (e.g., media appearances; expert panels and other speaking engagements; blogs, op-eds and other articles; etc.). - Represent EDF in meetings with high-level government officials, business executives, NGO leaders, and other key stakeholders. - In collaboration with the Vice President for Global Climate and EDF's Development staff, develop and execute an ambitious fundraising strategy to raise the resources necessary to meet EDF's program objectives in India. - Communicate regularly with U.S - based EDF staff to ensure close coordination and alignment on vision and strategy. Must Have: - Ability to articulate a compelling vision for progress on air quality, climate change, and inclusive growth, and to inspire others to join in actively helping to achieve that vision. - Minimum 15 years of relevant experience with 5-10 years of leadership experience managing multiple successful programs or projects, including overseeing staff and consultants with a proven track record of leading and growing a successful organization in the public, nonprofit, or private sectors. - Experience in achieving policy reforms in India through strategic campaigns and engagement with policy makers, regulators, elected officials and other key stakeholders. - Ability to make independent decisions while also acting in alignment with the strategic priorities of a global organization. - Ability to work productively and collaboratively with colleagues located in multiple offices and time zones. - Excellent written and oral communication skills. - Familiarity with the areas of climate change, energy, air pollution, and/or rural development, and a passion for addressing them. - Fluency in English and Hindi; fluency in at least one regional language will be an asset. - Ability to inspire funding from large foundations, private individuals, and family foundations, ideally with a demonstrated track record of fundraising success.
