Senior Commissioning Editor - Science/Technology & Medicine Domain (3-9 yrs)

1.Job Purpose

To contribute to the Press's publishing programme in Science, Technology and Medicine (STM). To take responsibility for commissioning new books, and working with authors, reviewers and others in bringing projects forward and ensuring their successful publication. To undertake market research for scope to develop new projects under global publishing and India Engineering Textbook programme.

2. Dimensions

Financial: Achieve commissioning targets, and operate generally within budget parameters

Staff: Reports to Publishing Manager. It is expected that the job holder will take responsibility for the majority of the responsibilities associated with role

3. Principal Accountabilities

- To contribute to the overall revenue of academic vertical and publish books for global and Indian markets.

- Pre-commissioning and commissioning

- Maintain awareness of major relevant trends in publishing.

- Assesses book proposal forms (BPF) and sample chapters.

- Conduct detailed market research and competitive analysis to determine areas where new products will result in revenue growth.

- To commission new authors, submit Syndicate Papers with particular emphasis on course books, textbooks and research monographs.

- Enhancements of existing content

- Conduct peer review with academics.

- Work with marketing and sales managers to forecast sales and pricing models.

- Extensive travelling, institutional coverage, attending conferences and author meetings

Work on contracted titles : 

- Work closely with authors and editors others as required, answering queries and giving guidance as appropriate for each project on intellectual content and structure.

- Co-ordination and management of author contracts

- Contribute to marketing and promotional work.

General administration : 

- Process honorariums.

- Ensure that relevant information on systems, including Jerome, is fully accurate and up to date.

- Work as part of a team, making sure that everyone is informed and advised as appropriate.

- Attend external meetings and events as required including appropriate scientific conferences and campus meetings.

Additional Duties :

- To carry out any other duties which may be reasonably expected byimmediate manager or a senior director.

- To abide by all Press policies and procedures, as detailed in the contract of employment and the Staff Handbook, e.g. Code of ethics, anti-bribery and corruption, Health and Safety, e-mail and Internet use and standards of behaviour.

4. Context

(a) Operating Environment:

Working with the Publishing Manager, will have close working relationships with sales, marketing and production teams within the Press. With strong emphasis on developing a market driven publishing programme, job holder will work closely with appropriate sales & marketing colleagues.

6. Knowledge and Experience

A postgraduate degree in engineering/science and at least 7 years' previous relevant publishing experience.

- Effective time management and project management skills.

- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to relate to all parties involved, includinga cademics at all levels, external suppliers, and internal colleagues.

- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

- The ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing.

- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work accurately and quickly to tight deadlines.

- A high standard of computer literacy: full Microsoft package and Adobe.

- Flexibility to handle new processes.

7. Job Challenge(s):

- Handling a wide range of tasks - including a large in-box and extensive communication with colleagues - competently and in a timely manner, knowing how to respond or who to ask for a response.

- Determining appropriate amounts of time and resource to allocate to individual projects.

- Working with PM to ensure that projects are running smoothly and cost-effectively, within time and budget parameters.

- Keeping up-to-date with systems requirements in order to ensure effective information, communication and reporting.

8. Additional Information:

A structured training programme will be provided to ensure that the job holder will acquire skills and knowledge to enable them to fulfil the role and to be in a position to progress to other publishing roles.
