The Group : Morningstar's Research Group creates independent investment research and data-driven analytics designed to help investors and Morningstar achieve better outcomes by making better decisions. Our quantitative and qualitative research encompasses hundreds of thousands of securities within a large breadth of asset classes including managed products, equities, fixed income, and structured credit. Morningstar is one of the largest independent sources of fund, equity, and credit data and research in the world, and our advocacy for investors- interests is the foundation of our company.

The Role : As a Director of Research, you will be responsible for managing a full-stack research and development unit comprised of multiple teams pursuing qualitative and quantitative research projects relevant to investors. These teams include quantitative research, software engineering, and model validation. The successful candidate will have impeccable interpersonal and communications skills, a solid quantitative mindset, a strong understanding of finance, and a deep knowledge of the global investing landscape.

Responsibilities:

- Manage our local R&D efforts across a variety of domains - including but not limited to managed products, fixed income, equities, credit, product experience, and data collection.

- Coordinate with global counterparts and other functional leaders on the management and execution of our shared research and development agenda.

- Collaborate with qualitative and quantitative analysts, data scientists, engineers, and model validators to develop new investment strategies, tools, signals, ratings and other original research.

- Keep pace with trends in the global financial industry, as well as academic research in data science and finance.

- Play a key role linking up with global analyst teams and harmonizing the global research effort as well as contributing to the local India business.

- Provide a clear structure and professional working environment for your staff to perform. Provide clear direction and an - open door- policy if staff require clarification, direction and assistance.

 -Lead local recruiting and staffing efforts to ensure the teams are fully operational at all times.

Requirements:

- 10+ years of experience working in global research organizations with proven team building and leadership skills.

- Experience managing larger teams and/ research centers of excellence.

- Ability to work successfully in a matrixed organization where team members have both functional as well as geographic reporting lines.

- A Degree in quantitative or financial discipline.

- Excellent written and oral communication skills.

- Excellent attention to detail and impeccable accuracy in written communication as well as running and proofing analyses and algorithms.

- Knowledge on the major trends in global markets, and how those trends are impacting Investor behaviors.

- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, while also taking ownership of projects independently with minimal supervision.

- Understands the market being served by staying on top of global market trends and putting Morningstar's corporate mission into practice.

- Understands Morningstar's direction and helps to create a powerful vision. Can decipher which projects have the highest ROI and recognize where intellectual property or R&D ideas can help further company growth.

- Ability to interface and project confidence and clarity directly with senior leaders both internally at Morningstar and externally with institutional clients.

- Ability to convert strategic plans into actionable programs and projects.

- Ability to create and promote a culture of technology excellence and innovation.

- Creative thinker with the ability to solve problems.

- Ability to communicate the technical possibilities and limitations of systems to non-technical colleagues in meaningful and constructive ways.

- Pragmatist who is bold, willing to think big, and encourage teams to act decisively.

Nice to have:

CFA designation.

- Graduate degree in finance, economics, business administration, or related field.

- Experience with agile principles including test-driven development, continuous integration and test automation.

- Experience with Python, AWS and various data storage, big data technology and streaming data processing.

- Familiarity with mutual fund, fixed income, and equity data is preferred.
