Manager - Engineering

Job Description :

- Management of the engineering and maintenance requirements to ensure optimum efficiency of plant and machinery and ensuring compliance to legislation and standards. The aim is to leverage equipment productivity, reliability and maintainability thereby enabling high plant availability and utilization at the lowest cost.

- To develop and sustain a maintenance policy that supports the companys business strategy and also ensures improved process control and subsequently quality using digital tools / systems.

- Recruit employees; assign, direct, and evaluate their work; and oversee the development & maintenance of staff competence

- Manage engineering projects & managing internal & external teams to accomplish their successful completion

- Plan & direct the installation, testing, operation, maintenance, and repair of facilities & equipment

- Further to this, the duties of this management position include :

- Involvement in process improvement type projects

- Pro-actively handling health and safety as well as environmental issues.

- Active participation with respect to Good Manufacturing Practices.

- Management of contracts involving engineering services

- Manager engineering opex and capex spends within agreed budget

- Manage capex process in line with company strategy and plant needs in short and long terms to make the most of capex investment, specifically with skills on capex estimations, budgeting & capability execute them on time.

- Mentor team of direct reports to constantly upgrade their skill and maintain high moral in the team

- Interact effectively to central technical function in Atlanta on key areas and seek necessary support

- Interact wit peer cross functional leadership team members to support and seek support as necessary.

- Interact with local statutory bodies / government officials to seek necessary approvals and maintaining 100% statutory compliance at all time.

- Use look at data to preempt issues and address them proactively. Ability to trouble shoot technical issues to provide support to the stakeholders spanning across all the functions.

- Work as an effective team player and a leader as required.

- Look at plant requirements with good business and financial acumen

- Lead value creation projects for the business with creative technical solutions

Key Duties/Responsibilities :

- Maintenance of the Plant and machinery through the use of preventive maintenance systems and best practices.

- Coordinate & direct projects with respect to the initiation, design and execution process.

- Initiate / lead / participate improvement projects with manufacturing.

- Actively contribute towards establishing and maintaining short and long term capital investment plans with respect to the facility master-plan.

- Cost control and adherence to the department operational budget.

- Preparation of the departments annual budget.

- Leadership: communicate, coach and offer direction to the Technical Department associates as well as actively contribute towards their development and training.

- Ensure that the Engineering services associates are trained in new technology and equipment.

- Continually manage and develop performance standards for the department and conduct performance reviews

- Ensure customer satisfaction through providing support to the various departments within the facility.

- Execute projects with agreed timelines and budgets with adequate controls

- Ensure compliance with respect to government legislation and company standards.

- Use digital tools techniques to enhance performance enhancement of the plant

Environmental Management, Occupational Health & Safety, and Food Safety & Quality :

- Cooperate and follow instructions given by the employer (CCIPL Leadership Team), Commissioner of Labour, Inspector or any other person lawfully authorized to give such instructions in keeping the working conditions safe and without risk to health and injury in the field of that activity.

- Ensure engineering controls to ensure compliance to Food Safety and Quality requirements

- Proactively address any situation before it becomes unsafe or unhealthy, potential ris from Safety, Health, Environment or Quality perspective.

- Ensure that relevant Engineering, occupational health and safety, Food safety and quality procedures, work instructions, and work aids are operative and adhered to in their functional areas.

- Ensures that associates understand their responsibilities / trained adequately in the Engineering, occupational health and safety, food safety and Quality management systems.

Financial/Job Scope :

- Preparation and obtaining approvals for opex budgets

- Preparation and obtaining approvals for capex budgets

- Ensure necessary controls for operating within opex budgets work on creating sustainable productivity improvements

- Adhere to agreed capex budgets and agreed completion and capitalization timelines to ensure capex OTIF by ensuring necessary controls.

- Deliver financial controls and reporting disciplines

Organization Impact/Influence :

Outside Contacts :

- Contacts with engineering project consultants / service providers

- High level interaction with suppliers and contractors with respect to projects, equipment supply and service as well as spare parts.

- Provide information to auditors to ensure continuous improvement in our systems and also display system integrity.

- Interaction with Government authorities for statutory compliance

Internal :

- All departments within the facility in order to provide and ensure adequate support.

- Participate globally with respect to the engineering DWT meetings and projects

Supervisory Responsibilities :

Responsible for a team of :

- Eight Technicians.

- Apprentices.

- 2 Engineers

- Engineering contractors.

- Responsible for the recruitment, training, coaching, mentoring, performance management, termination of all the associates that report to him as per standard Company procedures.

- Responsible for attending to all grievances, disciplinary issues as well team building and motivation needs for the department as per standard Company procedures. It is the first point of contact for all HR related issues.

- Responsible for the direct management, supervision and work coordination of all associates and contractors under his responsibility.

Related Job Requirements/Qualifications:

- A 10 to 15 year minimum proven track record as a independent Engineering Manager leading the function in a food or related industry.

- High levels of Integrity & work ethics.

- An ability to make decisions under pressure.

- Sound analytical and problem solving skills.

- Enjoy a multi-disciplined environment with varying degrees of difficulty.

- Sound interpersonal skills and the ability to lead, motivate and produce results through people.

- Stress management

- Being a good communicator

- Administration & organisation

- Networking

- A proven track record in project management would be would be a definite advantage.

Educational Requirements:

- Graduate degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical )

- Exposure to Lean / 6 sigma

- Exposure to I4.0 deployment

- Having to communicate between the various levels within the company. i.e. (Directors, Managers, Technicians, Operators and Cleaners)

Travel Requirements : No more than 10% of the annual time.

- This position requires a sound knowledge of the various engineering disciplines as well as an ability to make decisions based on sound reasoning.

- In addition to this incumbents must know their own level of competency and always act within these levels.

- Adhering to Code of Business Conduct in dealing with external contacts such as suppliers, consultants and contractors

- Dealings with contractors and various vendors are conducted in a professional and transparent manner.

- Position requires good interpersonal skills as interaction with maintenance team and other departments is crucial.

- Keep abreast with new technologies and developments within the engineering field.
