Livestock Market Systems Expert - IIM/NIRMA/XIMB (10-15 yrs)

Base Location Patna, Bihar with requirement of travelling to various project districts in Bihar and outside.

Reporting Structure Report to the Project Director, Bihar

Roles and Responsibilities: The person will have prime responsibility of planning and executing various interventions in livestock sector especially in poultry, goatery and fisheries sector. Arriving at appropriate feasible business models for small holder livestock farmers and exploring appropriate channels like FPC, Producer Groups (PGs) to provide market linkages and value added services like feed, veterinary and advisory services.

The livestock expert will also be responsible to support the project team in designing and executing other project interventions related to institution building/training of FPOs, aligned with the overall objectives of the project.

A detailed description of the role and responsibilities has been provided below:

1. Creating marketing linkages for the small holder livestock farmers

1.1. Liaise with JEEViKA livestock team to understand the program needs and develop a robust program design for different livestock interventions.

1.2. Assist in the development and strengthening of the Goat FPCs being developed by JEEViKA

1.3. Assist the Goat FPC in improving the marketing and value addition activities

1.4. Develop and execute the appropriate business model for small holder farmers in poultry and community based fisheries. Identify opportunities for developing community managed assets within the 3 sectors for inputs, extension and market linkages.

1.5. Identify various avenues to introduce digital systems for bringing in efficiencies in production and marketing of livestock.

1.6. Facilitate the formation of FPCs in each of the 3 livestock focus areas to channel inputs, value added services and market linkages in coordination with the JEEViKA livestock team.

1.7. Develop business plans, organization structure and financial viability plan for all livestock FPCs formed with support of JSPVAT program

1.8. Resource plans for livestock interventions as per project design.

1.9. Design and execute overall project deliverables along with other team members.

2. Training & Capacity Building

2.1. Training need assessment of JEEViKA teams, livestock producer groups and FPCs in managing the livestock programs and designing and executing training programs, exposure visits etc.

2.2. Liaison with various institutions and facilitate convergence with JEEViKA for effective training and capacity building.

3. Client Communication and Reporting

3.1. Prepare plans, reports, presentations, updated and other deliverables are part of project reviews and project management, as well as reporting to the client and to the steering committee.

3.2. Lead and support the team in development of various reports and other communication material for client and other stakeholders.

3.3. Other project management and reporting requirements as might be needed to support the Project Director.

4. Team management

4.1. Lead sub-teams focused on livestock interventions of JSPVAT

4.2. Groom and mentor team members to execute the livestock team strategy and interventions

Educational Qualifications

- Masters in Rural Development /Rural management/Dairy Technology from Tier I institutes like IIM ABM, IRMA, MANAGE, NIAM, XIMB, NDRI etc.

- Under graduate in Veterinary Sciences preferred.

Desired Experience and Skills

- A minimum 10 years of experience in livestock production and/or marketing.

- Demonstrated, proven and quantifiable results in creating market linkages, value addition opportunities and similar interventions in livestock sector either in poultry, goatery and/or fisheries.

- Sound understanding and experience of different business models for small holder poultry farming (layer, broiler and/or dual purpose birds).

- Good understanding of the goatery value chain including on different breeds, production and value addition (meat industry)

- Experience of working in commercial poultry industry, meat industry or fisheries business will be preferred

- Consulting experience for livestock sector will be an added advantage. Experience of working in Bihar will be an added advantage.

- Understanding of functioning of community institutions, their strengths, weaknesses etc.

- Experience of managing teams on market linkages or field implementation projects.

- Excellent team management and leadership skills.

- Experience of working on market linkages for livestock FPOs will be preferred.

- Excellent report writing skills.

- Excellent oral communication in Hindi and English.

- Ability and experience to work under semi-structured environment.

- Self-motivated and driven.

- Passion to work for rural / agribusiness development areas.
