Role : Lead Data Scientist Location : Bangalore Reports To : Head of Data Science Global Markets Overview : Highlights of department : Global Markets is HSBCs trading and sales business, which generated USD6.8bn of revenue in 2017 and counts approximately 3,500 staff globally. Global Markets has a strong tradition of quantitative research and employs more than 100 experts in domains like derivatives modelling and risk management, e-trading and data science. The business, highly quantitative in nature, presents in some areas a number of opportunities to apply data science generally and specifically machine learning to practical problems. Outcomes will often be directly measurable. Purpose of the job : - The Data Scientist will be part of the Global Markets Data Science team. The team works closely with the desks (individual business units) to help them qualify data science-led opportunities. - Desk heads would typically come with an idea they would like to explore. This can be an analysis of corporate client behaviour patterns to improve sales team efficiency, a review of the impact on market movements of a concentration of activity on certain products, the automation of data cleansing, etc. - One or two members of the data science team are then seconded to work directly with the desk. - Focused on this specific project for a limited number of months, the objective is to identify the approach best suited to tackle the problem, being agnostic to the preferred approach. - The team delivers a prototype which allows the business owner to qualify the opportunity and decide whether he/she wants to invest to implement it into production. - At which point the data scientist steps back, keeping some oversight on implementation but moving on to the next project. - The job holder will have to demonstrate an ability to apprehend complex problems, relate to business executive and practitioners and pragmatism. Responsible For : The successful candidate will be undertaking the following role : - Engage with the desks to understand the nature of the data science-led opportunity - Identify what data sets are available, balance hurdles and time required to gain access to new data sets with perceived value added - Prepare the data and perform initial analytics - Constantly iterate with the desk to progressively identify the solution most suited to the problem; - Discuss with the data science team and leverage internal and external scientific knowledge; - Deliver a prototype that can be used to run ad hoc analyses or serve as the basis for a production version. It will be fully tested and documented. - Contribute a business case so that the desk can take full ownership of the pilot and take it to the next step, i.e: production and industrialisation - Share experience and achievements with the data science team. Essential Experience (in order of importance) : Including: technical knowledge, company/industry experience, IT knowledge (levels required), languages etc. Essential : These tasks will require : - Experience as a data scientist, quantitative analyst, senior scientist in a commercial and/or research environment. - Can demonstrate a good understanding of probability, statistics, big data mining and machine learning. - Strong expertise in one specific data science domain such as deep learning, reinforcement learning, network analytics. - Expertise in programming in one or several standard languages (C/C++, Python, Java, R, etc.) - Comfortable with standard data science environments (e.g.: notebooks, Hadoop) Essential Skills/Competencies : - High quality further education, preferably in Physics, Computer Science, Engineering or Applied Mathematics. - Ability to work unsupervised and collaborative nature, must quickly integrate within Global Markets businesses. - Engineer mind-set: solution-oriented, always prefers a simple solution that works to a solution more scientifically advanced producing similar results. - Inquisitive, resilient, won't give up if initial results are not conclusive or in the face of adverse comments. - Entrepreneur-like: keen to deliver a Minimum Viable Product and get buy in from internal clients . - Can communicate / present fluently to audiences at differing ability levels on fields outside of their own specific technical skills. Ideal Experience : - Detailed working knowledge of Python and Data Science libraries such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow - Experience in data science projects : 5years+ - Essential - Experience of putting data science models into production for business applications - Preferable - Exposure to investment banking or investment management - Preferable - International experience - Preferrable - Connections with centres of excellence in machine learning and big data: tech companies, academia.
