Head - Internal Audit - BFS (15-25 yrs)

Strategy/policy planning and implementation:

Head of Internal Audit For Kenya (East Africa)

- Develop creative and innovative strategies for the Internal Audit department that are in line with the Bank's overall strategy.

- Keep abreast of local and global best practices in internal audit and make recommendations to the Chairman Audit Committee on how this impact the Bank.

- Demonstrate ownership of and communicate Internal Audit's strategic direction and objectives to all staff.

- Monitor the department's performance to ensure objectives and targets are achieved.

- Develop policies and procedures for Internal Audit and ensure that audit manuals are up to date.

- Provide support and advice to line managers on implementation of internal audit policies and procedures.

- Prepare the internal audit budget and work program and follow up its implementation up on approval.

Audit Program Management:

- Direct the identification and evaluation of the Bank's risk areas and oversee the development of the Annual Audit plan.

- Lead Internal Audit staff in the planning, organizing and monitoring of internal audit operations.

- Direct the overall performance of Audit procedures, including identifying and defining issues, developing criteria, reviewing and analyzing evidence and documenting client process and procedures.

- Guide internal audit staff in conducting interviews, reviewing documents, developing and administering surveys, composing summary memos and preparing working papers.

- Provide guidance to staff in the identification development and documentation of Audit issues and recommendations.

- Ensure that the Bank complies with rules, regulations and directives of the CBK and government proclamations as well as the Bank's Board resolutions.

- Review the Bank's operational and control mechanisms and recommend improvement of systems and procedures.

- Oversee the preparation of quality internal audit reports and the oral presentation of the same to Management and the Board of Directors.

- Develop and maintain productive staff, management and Board relationships through individual contacts and group meetings.

- Participate and attend different management and committee meetings as assigned.

- Respond to queries pertaining to control mechanisms and other functions of the Bank.

- Review and approve work program of the Department.

- Approve internal audit reports and submit the same for Management Deliberation.

- Ensure that all books of accounts for the Bank are regularly audited and inspected.

- Facilitate the activities of the bank's External Auditors and follow-up their performance.

IT Audits:

- In collaboration with risk management team, conduct risk assessment on IT-related functions and processes and report on the same.

- Analyse risk controls and recommend process and control improvements.

- Collaborate with risk management team in conducting awareness relating to IT risks to build capacity.

Special Investigations:

- Lead and coordinate special investigations as assigned by the Board, the Board Audit Committee and/or the CEO or through the internal audit's own initiative.

- Execute investigatory procedures, including, but not limited to review and analysis of specific allegations, collecting documentary evidence to support investigatory findings, interviewing of witnesses and investigation targets, reviewing of electronic documents and evidence and determining compliance with established policies and procedures.

- Examine reports to detect potential outliers and validate data integrity.

- Prepare special investigation and audit reports to document scope, procedures, findings and recommendations; interpret the significance of findings, conclude on findings and make practical recommendations for remediation.

- Communicate with and sensitize process owners on the importance of anti-fraud controls.

Board Reporting:

- Communicate the results of internal audits via written reports and oral presentations to Board of Directors and the Board Audit Committee.

- Represent internal audit department at Management and Board meetings and with external organizations as assigned. Leadership and People Management.

- Identify, develop, deploy and retain talented staff including completing performance appraisals effectively and on time in accordance with the established talent management procedures.

- Adhere to compliance and operational risk controls in accordance with the Bank's and regulatory standards, policies and practices and ensure that all staff are familiar with them.

- Develop accountability structures, oversee periodic reporting and monitor the performance indicators for Internal Audit department.

- Perform other related duties as emanates from the post, as and when assigned by the Chairman Audit Committee.

Related Job Experience/Qualifications:

- Bachelors & Master's Degree in Management, Economics, Insurance, Law, Finance or related discipline from a reputable university.

- Should be a Chartered Accountant, (CA). Other related Certifications are an added advantage.

- At least Fifteen years' experience in internal audit with a minimum of five years at senior management level preferably from the Banking Industry.

- Desirable age is around 45yrs

Additional skills:

- Excellent Knowledge of banking operations and risk-based auditing.

- Understanding of the standards of Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) and ability to fully comply with IIA standards.

- Good understanding of the following knowledge areas:

- Financial accounting and finance

- Managerial accounting

- Impact of government legislation and regulation on business and economics

- Quality management frameworks

- Ethics and fraud

- Information systems operations, management and control frameworks

- Governance, risk, and control frameworks

- Internal audit standards, theory, and methodology

- Leadership and people management including performance management, coaching & mentoring.

- High-level interpersonal and cross-cultural skills, including ability to build consensus, alliances and collaborative relationships with sensitivity to diversity/inclusion.

- Creativity and innovation skills, with ability to use technology and other modern tools to drive decision making and implementation.

- Professionalism and integrity in line with the Bank values.

- High-level oral and written communication skills.

- Critical and analytical thinking and problem solving skills

- Personal motivation and drive exhibited through commitment to hard work, continuous improvement and achievement of goals.

- Good customer relationship management skills (internal and external customers)

- Risk awareness and focus- demonstrates understanding of risk management practices, standards and regulatory requirements

- Effective stakeholder management.

Job location: Kenya

Contract Period:

The position would be on contract basis for 2/3 yrs. Renewable on mutual consent.
