Director/Partner - Direct Tax (10-13 yrs)
The Director/Partner of Direct Tax is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing and managing the direct tax function within a professional services firm or a large organization. This position involves providing strategic guidance, technical expertise, and client-focused direct tax solutions. The Director/Partner collaborates closely with clients, internal teams, and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with tax laws, minimize tax liabilities, and optimize tax strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership:
- Develop and implement the firm's/organization's direct tax strategy, aligning it with broader business goals and regulatory changes.
- Provide thought leadership on evolving direct tax trends, legislative developments, and best practices.
Client Engagement:
- Build and nurture strong relationships with clients, acting as a trusted advisor on direct tax matters.
- Understand clients' business operations, assess tax risks, and propose effective tax strategies to optimize compliance and reduce tax burdens.
Technical Expertise:
- Stay current with local and international direct tax laws, regulations, rulings, and case law to provide accurate and timely advice.
- Offer technical guidance and mentorship to both junior and senior team members.
Tax Planning and Optimization:
- Collaborate with clients to identify tax planning opportunities that align with their business objectives and minimize tax liabilities.
- Develop and implement strategies for cross-border transactions, transfer pricing, and other complex tax matters.
Compliance and Reporting:
- Oversee the preparation, review, and filing of accurate and timely direct tax returns and related documentation.
- Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and reporting obligations.
Risk Management:
- Identify potential direct tax risks and exposures for clients and the firm/organization.
- Devise strategies to mitigate risks and work with clients to establish robust internal controls.
Business Development:
- Lead business development efforts by identifying new business opportunities, fostering client relationships, and contributing to sales presentations and proposals.
- Expand the firm's/organization's client base and market presence through leveraging expertise and networks.
Team Leadership and Development:
- Manage and nurture a high-performing team of direct tax professionals, providing coaching, training, and performance feedback.
- Cultivate a collaborative and innovative work environment to promote professional growth.
Regulatory Compliance and Audits:
- Interact with tax authorities, regulators, and auditors when necessary, ensuring compliance with direct tax laws and regulations.
- Manage and resolve tax audits or disputes in collaboration with legal and finance teams.
Thought Leadership:
- Contribute to the field's thought leadership by publishing articles, whitepapers, or presenting at industry conferences to showcase expertise.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Extensive experience in direct tax consulting, advisory, or related roles, including leadership experience.
- Strong knowledge of local and international direct tax regulations, including corporate taxation, individual taxation, and international tax treaties.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain client relationships.
- Proficiency in tax software, data analytics tools, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Proven track record of business development and revenue growth.
