Job Description :


The overall purpose of this role is to lead the development and execution of the marketing strategy and plans, ensuring local alignment to the global marketing strategy and to work in partnership with the strategic business unit to ensure that English and Exams products and services meet the required business targets.


Client Details :

- The English and Examinations Strategic Business Unit (E&E) is one of three strategic business units in the British Council (the others being Arts and Education & Society) all of which have the remit to build trust for the people of the UK by building relationships through aspects of our language and culture. E&E achieves this by enabling people across the world to access the life-changing education and work opportunities that are created by learning English or gaining valuable UK qualifications. 


- The British Council's 2020 vision for English & Examinations is to be the world authority in high quality English language teaching, learning and assessment, as well as the International distributor of choice for UK professional and school qualifications. Currently E&E delivers around 3.5 million exams worldwide per year across in 110 countries


- BC Examinations and English Services India Private Limited (BCEESIPL) is a subsidiary and the second largest exams operating unit employing 350 staff across 4 offices in India. We are seeking to expand the leadership team in order to meet increased business volume underpinned by the deployment of new technology solutions. In 2018/19 it will deliver 700,000 examinations in 45 cities across India as well as providing B2C Digital Learning courses, corporate ELT training services and two major employability skills and assessment projects with State Governments.

Function Overview :

Marketing at the British Council is a strategic function which drives awareness, understanding and engagement across our diverse audiences. We use insight, knowledge and analysis of our markets and our customers to engage them with the British Council's international cultural relations mission, our products and services in the most impactful and effective way. We lead the development of our brand and use our expertise to tell inspiring stories to enhance our global reputation, build lifelong relationships, engage our staff and prove the impact of what we do.

Opportunity & Responsibilities:

- To lead the development of the marketing strategy and the marketing plan for the IELTS brand in India, with focus on maintaining and growing market share, whilst ensuring alignment to the global marketing strategy and brand strategy

- Work with the global exams team and country team to ensure that country marketing programmes deliver planned business targets


- Develop the capability and capacity of marketing in the organisation by building relevant skills knowledge and expertise


- To ensure the country marketing plan is executed to the highest possible standards to ensure the effective and integrated delivery of all B2C and B2B marketing activity, maximising market share and ROI


The Marketing Director :

- Develops and manages the marketing strategy for BCEESIPL ensuring alignment to global SBU marketing strategies and plans, objectives and financial and business development targets and the overarching global marketing strategy for the British Council

- Plans, delivers and evaluates marketing strategies and activities across English & Exams products including demand / lead generation campaigns and activities to drive conversions from leads to sales to meet target

- Provides appropriate input to product development

- Ensures monitoring of marketing performance for English & Exams products

Consultancy, analysis & problem-solving :

- Applies core technical/professional knowledge, recognised best practice approaches and insight from previous experience to develop marketing strategies and plans and resolve issues and risks

- Conducts analysis based on insights and research and external trend/ market analysis to provide high quality and evidence-based marketing advice, recommendations and plans


Internal customer focus :

- Builds an in-depth understanding of the specific operational context, opportunities and challenges for the SBU and the region to ensure the provision of marketing advice and plans is based on informed business insight

- Proactively seeks internal customer and other stakeholder feedback to monitor satisfaction with the standard of marketing advice and business support provided


Services Improvement :

- Identifies opportunities for improvements to marketing for English & Exams products and determines how to progress these, working collaboratively with the SBU leads in country, and the SBU global marketing team

Profile :

The candidate must have:

- Significant experience managing an international consumer brand

- Significant experience of working in fast-moving highly competitive consumer markets


- Experience of working through distribution intermediaries in India


- Experience of management of creative, media buying and digital delivery agencies in India


- Excellent leadership skills


- Experience of strategic marketing planning to achieve share growth in highly competitive markets with demonstrable evidence of ROI


- Experience in effectively negotiating budgets and resources with senior managers


- Experience of delivering results through a dispersed team
