Director - Engineering - EduTech (7-15 yrs)
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced engineering leader to join our team in the role of Director of Engineering.
In this role, you will:
- Scope and lead technical projects with enormous impact across many teams
- Lead recruitment of high quality engineers for our development team
- Directly contribute to product development by writing code
- Architect systems for scale and stability
- Serve as a role model for our high engineering standards and bring consistency to the many codebases and processes you will encounter
- Collaborate with stakeholders across disciplines like product, design, and customer success
You may be a fit if:
- You have a computer science or equivalent degree from a leading technology institute
- You have a strong technical background, with 5+ years of experience with software engineering
- You have managed engineering teams that have a strong record of shipping products
- You have successfully recruited and mentored engineers
- Prefer simple solutions and designs over complex ones, and have a good intuition for what is lasting and scalable
Required technical skills:
- Proficiency in Javascript, HTML5/CSS3, SQL
- Experience with frameworks like React, ReactNative, Node.js, GraphQL
- Experience with databases technologies like PostgreSQL, ElasticSearch, Redis
- Experience with dev ops - AWS, CI/CD
- Understanding of security principles and possible attacks
Within three months you will:
- Develop an in-depth understanding of our users and product
- Recruit a team of 3-5 engineers
- Lead engineering starting with one product team and keep switching between teams to establish rapport with every engineer and familiarity with the entire code base
- Define an efficient process for Agile software development and implement it across teams
Within six months you will:
- Lead engineering across all product teams at collaborating with the Product, Marketing & Customer Success to ship software of exceptional quality
- Define a process for maintaining healthy engineering culture (Cadence for one-on-ones, meeting structures etc.)
- Take charge of engineering performance reviews and define an efficient system for promotions and firing
- Scale the team from time to time to ensure adequate engineering bandwidth
