Context

Despite highly successful initiatives to attain universal education, India is home to 14% of the world's out-of-school children. In the urban regions, schooling rates among street children and in the slums are very poor with 63% of them being illiterate.

While the reasons for children staying out of school vary, no single organization in India has been able to solve for the last mile access at scale.Thecompany is working to create a scalable, replicable model to reach all 50,000 out of school children in Gurgaon by 2020.

The program which has been designed, implemented, and refined over a period of two years to effectively bring children to grade-level competency is now being adopted by the Haryana state government. In the academic year 2018-19, we intend to take our learnings from 10 non-formal centers to 20 government schools and scale up operations to reach 5000 children.

Our Model

We believe that all the knowledge to serve our children already exists in the ecosystem and we only have to play the role of an enabler. We brings together implementing and funding partners, leverages on the experience of program partners and creates an outcome-focused approach through data driven feedback loops.

Our Program has 4 key components -

Non Formal Education - The NFE curriculum focuses on basics of literacy, numeracy and socio emotional skills. It is designed to take place over forty (40) weeks and includes a baseline exam, regular assessments, and placing students in subsections based on their performance.

Early Childhood Education - ECE program is for ages three (3) through six (6), which includes three hours of play based instruction and one hour of lunch and recess. The focus is on four indicators of development: cognitive, physical, socio-emotional, and language.

Teacher Development Program - To implement ECE and NFE programs, we recruit and develop teachers from the local communities. Our teachers go through an intensive yearlong in-service training program to learn and practice basic competencies of being a teacher.

Community Engagement Program - A community outreach leader, appointed by the partner, establishes a presence within each community. In addition to identify out-of-school children, the leader also builds trusting relationships with families - particularly mothers - and other important community figures. There are monthly community events to improve awareness about costs and benefits of high quality education for children.

Responsibilities

From being a start-up in the social sector, our ambition is to scale up and to reach 50,000 out of school kids in Gurgaon, and penetrate other states in India through a partnership model. As the CEO of the company, you will be leading the overall project and will be responsible for ensuring mutually decided outcomes and impact.

Your specific role will include the following -

- Leading the vision and the organization -Our Model is designed for scale. As we learn to implement in partnership with state government this year, you will be taking the program to 200 schools next year. This will require leading the our team consisting of the Academics Lead and the Monitoring and Evaluation Lead.

- Partnerships - Working together and learning from each other is the foundation of our Model. You will be responsible for ensuring the success of the model with existing implementing partners for this year by building their capacity including holding weekly check-ins and monthly goal settings. We will also need to nurture more partners/entrepreneurs for scaling up next year.

- Fundraising - You will be working closely with the existing funding partners as well as nurturing relationships with foundations and CSRs who can be potential donors for next year. You will be supported by the Trustees in this role through relevant connections and will also be required to leverage your existing network.

Experience and Competencies

We are looking for a candidate with minimum 10 years of experience with at least 2 of them in a senior leadership position. A strong understanding of the social development space in India is important along-with the issues and challenges related to education. You must be passionate about this cause with a high degree of energy.

The CEO will operate with complete empowerment with key outcomes being agreed, and must have the ability to operate independently. S/he must have the capacity to engage and influence the partners, and build their capacity.

TAP India aims to maintain lean operations and build leadership capacity in the ecosystem particularly with the implementing partners/entrepreneurs and the state. Your strengths must include the domains of developing people and designing systems/environments which can enable learning for small teams and organizations working at the grassroots level.
