Role title: Head of India and South Asia

Job type: 12-month contract with ambition to become full time permanent

Location: Delhi, currently work-from-home.

Applications will only be accepted on Applied: https://app.beapplied.com/apply/wtjo3n0zx8

About Us :

The Behavioural Insights Team (BIT) is a social purpose company that combines two approaches to improve people's lives and communities. First, we use behavioural science ( economics, psychology and anthropology) to design new policy ideas with our partners. Second, we run policy experiments, often using randomised controlled trials (RCTs), to determine the effectiveness of those ideas.

Working at BIT you'll be part of an innovative and agile team working at the forefront of cutting edge, evidence-driven applied behavioural science.

We believe that if you understand how people make decisions in the real world, you can design and deliver better policies and services. We work with government, NGO and private sector partners across the globe to design human-centred solutions that are creative, low-cost and scalable - and we robustly evaluate our recommendations to make sure they actually result in better outcomes.

We believe passionately in our company values: always prioritising social impact, making evidence-based recommendations, being open to new ideas or points of view, collaborating on everything and servicing our partners and clients.. As our team grows, we are now looking for a Senior Advisor to join us.

We provide a supportive environment, offering flexible working arrangements and other policies to ensure the wellbeing of everyone on the team.

About the role :

The Behavioural Insights Team (BIT) is looking for an experienced candidate to significantly expand our presence in India and the South Asia region, delivering social impact by tackling pressing policy issues. You would work with colleagues in Indonesia, Singapore, U.K. and Australia. This role would be based in Delhi.

The ideal candidate will have a strong network across governments and funders in India and the South Asia region, and experience in driving and delivering business development, leading high performing teams and guiding programme delivery.

We currently have several projects in the region, for example improving health insurance in India and increasing hygiene in Bangladesh. Our aim is to increase this and secure more projects over the next 12 months. You will report to the APAC Director of International Programmes, but will be expected to lead our work in India and the South Asia region with a high degree of autonomy. This role would initially be contract based (12 months) with ambition to be extended into a permanent position.

The role has the following 5 main responsibilities:

(1) You will secure projects and build a pipeline of work in India and South Asia, including which countries to target, what work to pursue, how to staff the projects.

(2) You will develop and leverage relationships, build BIT's brand in India, and engage in a range of business and profile building opportunities (such as attending conferences, running workshops and speaking engagements) that will convert into impactful programs of work.

(3) You will establish and grow your team, being the direct line manager to some and acting as a coach and mentor to all.

(4) You will oversee all projects in India and the South Asia region from proposal, through the delivery of a new approach, to any scale-up.

(5) You will need to balance commercial demands against BIT's core mission of social impact to ensure a thriving business and organisation.

Skills for the role :

Demonstrate expertise and leadership:

- You have strong leadership skills - including a demonstrated ability to be entrepreneurial, adaptable, build a team, and tackle issues constructively as they arise

- You have a strong understanding of behavioural science literature and/or the ability to design rigorous research and service delivery projects

Grow BIT's network and reach:

- You have a strong network in India and South Asia across organisations tackling social and economic problems: regional governments, NGOs, multilaterals and other funders

- You have experience of developing and delivering business plans and meeting targets

- You will have excellent program management skills; ensuring a commitment to quality in all aspects of delivery

- You have experience in managing and developing key partner relationships (at least 5 years) , especially with government, multinational and philanthropic funders. You understand their priorities and provide trusted advice that addresses their concerns.

Lead a team:

- Experience in developing and building your team. You will ensure your team is sufficiently challenged, supported and has the opportunity to deploy their skills as best they can. You will set expectations for team performance and support them in achieving these goals. Where additional skills or resources are needed, you will identify, recruit, motivate and develop the best people

- Experience in the delivery of a range of projects. You ensure projects are high quality and impactful, and are delivered efficiently and on budget. You lead by example and support the team's effective collaboration.

- Ensure a healthy pipeline with social impact projects:

- Planning skills to ensure a strong pipeline of projects that provides financial sustainability for the team, whilst not sacrificing social impact, intellectual challenge and feasibility of delivery.

- Win new work by actively pursuing leads, inspiring partners and commissioners to work with us and overseeing successful bids and pitches.

- Work with colleagues to build a business plan and budgets for the team.

Why work for BIT?

- We have a hive mindset where we think out loud, share ideas and learn from one another. You will work alongside a friendly, talented, and driven team with diverse expertise - from economics to anthropology and neuroscience - and a wide variety of personal and professional backgrounds. -What unites us is the goal to have a positive social impact through our work.

- We encourage flexible working and have a culture which enables this. This includes flexible start and finish times, and an IT set up which allows for easy working-from-home options.

We have regular team get-togethers with inspirational external guest speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds and specialisms. There's always something new to learn about!

How to apply :

At the interview stage, you will be asked questions that reflect the role, so you have the chance to demonstrate your skills. It's at this stage we first see your CV. We always give all applicants feedback, no matter what stage your application reaches.
