AVP/Director - Patent Operations/Patent Search & Analytics (12-15 yrs)

The AVP/Director Patent Search & Analytics will be primarily responsible for P&L management and Service Delivery for U.S. & European patent search and analytics functions in respect of multiple customers. The role also requires overseeing search/analytics staff including domain specialists in Life Sciences and Hitech verticals based in India. Quality control and direct, hands-on supervision of patent search and analytics functions connected with performing Innovation scouting, Partner Identification, Competitive Intelligence, Portfolio Management, White Space Analysis / Landscape Analysis, Trend Analysis, Profiling as well as prior art searches (incl. knock out search, patentability search, FTO, invalidity and landscape search) are key responsibilities. The candidate is also expected to function as a mentor and a subject matter expert (SME) for the above verticals. The candidate should be able to grow the P&L, manage service delivery, build solid client relationships and manage internal stakeholders for effective functioning of the unit. Should have a growth mindset and the ability to achieve best in class service levels and deliver continuous improvement.

The role requires the candidate to have first-hand knowledge of U.S. and European patent laws. The candidate should have ideally managed a search and analytics unit in another comparable organization and should have clearly demonstrable experience of having grown the unit.

In a leadership role, the candidate should be able to acting as a key owner of business metrics and service delivery performance for global clients relative to patent search and analytics related projects. Should be able to lead a group of up to 50-75 employees, mentor and motivate them into achieving world class delivery. Client relationship management (CRM) at senior levels, oversight of commercial contracts and driving continuous improvement are the key functions the candidate will be expected to perform.

Job Responsibilities:

The AVP/Director Patent Search and Analytics Operations will coach, train and mentor a team of managers/senior managers handling patent search and analytics functions in all aspects of the business of US patent preparation and prosecution. Following are the key goals for this position:

a) Achieving Revenue and EBITDA numbers as per annual operating plan

b) Driving sales performance through rigorous reviews, workshops, roadshows

c) Building new capabilities at the company for Patent Search and Analytics functions

d) Develop and manage an expert center in different technology areas, independently lead farming initiatives, develop new client contacts, expand existing client accounts by regular follow-ups and by ascertaining their IP needs.

e) Identify new support services and implement client centric solutions with high quality

f) Deliver a world class service experience to existing and new Customers

g) Re-engineering processes to achieve world class quality

h) Leading & implementing new technology tools leading to enhanced service quality, efficiency and productivity metrics

i) 100% compliance to all internal processes - business continuity, information security, ISO, internal/external audits

j) Coordinating patent prosecution matters with the office of the Chief IP officer, Outside Counsels and in-house attorneys of the Customers

k) Overseeing day-to-day operational delivery of all search and analytics processes performed by the team in India.

l) Overseeing Service Delivery metrics across different clients. Converting client deliverables into KPIs for the delivery team.

m) Subject matter oversight and supervision on matters concerning prior art searches.

n) Foster an environment of openness and trust and enabling learning and development for all employees

o) Import training on search and analytics functions to the team in India

p) Develop training materials and offer training to employees in relation to Search and Analytics functions

q) Offer technical support, subject matter expertise, and solutioning support to sales and business development team

r) Participate in process building, process innovation, automation and similar activities directed at organization development.

s) Quality control of the work-products generated by the team

t) Help in establishing the brand globally, and in that relation the management may task the candidate to attend conferences, networking events, road-shows and also carry out regular visits to various potential and existing client facilities.

u) Provide every possible sales and marketing support including by offering online presentations, attending conference calls to render presentations on service lines and related processes, making client specific proposals, and obtaining client references (if and when specifically required).

v) Work with stakeholders across the organization to define the roadmap for growing client relationships and accounts

w) When required travel to client facilities for on-site reviews

x) When required attend potential customer presentations

y) Attend client sales and marketing meetings, internal sales meetings, Clex strategy meetings when asked for

z) Manage any special projects that IP Services Business Head will require from time to time.

Other Details:

Educational/professional qualifications: Experience in managing US Patent Search & Analytics functions. Must possess a degree in patent law/paralegal domains.

Experience: 13-15 years with atleast 10 years in Patent Search & Analytics Operations Manager in an IP law firm or of a large in-house paralegal operation of technology company or a company in India providing patent paralegal support activities to U.S. clients. Should have previously handled multiple client relationships and P&L responsibilities. Should have handled a large volume of patent search and analytics functions relating to electrical, communications, semi-conductors, microprocessors and computer software related inventions, or inventions in the field of life sciences (pharmaceutical, biotech and healthcare segments). Should have expertise in searching, analyzing and synthesizing information for providing strategic insights to R&D teams, Inventors, Product Development Teams, Attorneys, Open Innovation, Business Development & Strategy teams. Should have prior experience in analyzing data from multiple sources such as Business research sites, company websites, trade portals, Patents, Scientific Literature, Products, News, etc. for generating insights / trends.

Qualification(s)

- Preferred - PhD, M.Sc/M.Tech/M.Pharm- Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical, Bioinstrumentation, Biochemistry, Plant Science and other domain related to Life sciences, or.

- M.Tech - Computer Sciences, Physics, Electronics, Electrical or Mechanical
