Alavara - Senior Product Manager - Cross Border (4-10 yrs)

Job Duties :

- Product Managers work with Avalara's product teams to define the future direction and scope for our compliance products and services.


- These services are the backbone of our services and critical to Avalara's end-to-end product offerings.

- We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced Product Manager to join our Cross-Border team and lead the next phase of growth for our Tariff Classification products as we scale and automate our investments in this area.

- As a Cross-Border Product Manager, you will own and drive programs that position Avalara as the leading Cross-Border service provider.


- Specifically, you will focus on applying our Cross-Border capabilities to the International Parcel Shipping community.


- This includes being responsible for leading the development and management of products or solutions that facilitate accurate and efficient Harmonized System (HS) classification.


- In this role, you will be charting new products and features to help customers who are shipping DDP internationally, address challenges around classification and to ensure compliance with international trade regulations.

- You will work with a cross-functional and geographically dispersed team, document and track all product requirements, drive efficiencies through automation, quantify and measure key product metrics, and optimize customer value.


- You will have ownership for product success and be supported by a matrixed team that includes program management, data science, engineering, marketing, documentation, and Avalara's customer support and training teams.

What you'll do ?

- Articulate a compelling product strategy and execute on a roadmap for Avalara's Tariff Classification solutions that synthesizes customer needs, market dynamics, and business requirements.

- Conduct market research to understand customer requirements, competitive landscape, and industry trends related to tariff classifications.

- Drive product adoption and revenue growth by partnering with sales, marketing, and customer success teams to develop effective go-to-market strategies.

- Engage with customers, partners, and industry experts to gather feedback, validate product concepts, and identify opportunities for product improvements.

- Understand product data, including analytics, establish program KPIs, assess competitor and general eCommerce trends to ensure overall program success

- Research and write detailed product requirements including but not limited to user stories for engineering to execute against.

- Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure timely and high-quality product delivery, including feature prioritization, release planning, and sprint execution.

- Collaborate with the Customer Support, Sales training, Implementation and Engineering organizations to identify dependencies and navigate priorities to meet roadmap commitments.

- Monitor product performance and usage metrics, conduct data analysis, and make data-driven decisions to optimize product features and user experience.

- Stay up to date with industry regulations, standards, and best practices related to tariff classifications and incorporate them into the product roadmap.

- Drive critical issues to resolution, internally and with partners and customers, acting as a primary point of escalation for stakeholders.

Qualifications :

- 5+ years overall professional career experience with a mix of startup and big company perspectives

- 3+ years experience as a SaaS Product Manager

- 3+ years experience in the international logistics industry working with fulfillment, customs brokerage operations and a strong understanding of Harmonized System (HS) codes and international trade regulations.

- A genuine passion for understanding cross-border business, strategy, and our clients' challenges to inspire new and improved ways of solving their problems

- Experience with working with customers and regulatory bodies to understand their requirements and ensure compliance with import/ export related trade regulations.

- Experience with agile development methodologies, the Product Owner role, and commonly used tools such as Jira, Confluence, etc.

- Capable of managing multiple, complex, cross-functional initiatives at once

- Advanced analytics skills, experience with data manipulation, data analysis, and data visualization tools and with AI/ML-based product development.

- Ability to deliver requirements appropriate for the project at hand.

- Strong attention to detail

- Regularly track key application metrics, identify and drive improvements.

- A team player able to drive results through influence and enthusiasm.

- Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with experience conducting small-group briefings and demos both internally and with customers.

Preferred Qualifications :

- Strong understanding of the Harmonized System (HS) and its structure, including the rules, regulations, and guidelines for classifying products according to the HS codes. This includes knowledge of the General Rules of Interpretation (GRIs), explanatory notes, and legal frameworks related to tariff classification.

- Familiarity with international trade regulations and customs procedures, including knowledge of customs laws, import/export regulations, and documentation requirements. Understanding the implications of tariff classification decisions on duties, taxes, and trade compliance.

- Strong research skills to identify relevant information, interpret legal texts, and analyze product details for appropriate classification. The ability to research and interpret industry-specific regulations, rulings, and case studies.

- Proficiency in utilizing software applications and classification tools specifically designed for HS tariff classification.

- Familiarity with customs software systems and databases that aid in efficient and accurate classification processes.

- Experience with tax automation products, ERP, eCommerce platforms, and other financial systems

- Familiarity with accounting and transaction tax compliance concepts (i.e., sales tax returns)

- Analytical solid skillset with industry knowledge and ability to apply the innovation trends

- Experience with the operations dashboards implementation and data analytics

- Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with experience conducting small-group briefings and demos both internally and with customers.

- Experience working with partners and 3rd party developers.

- Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field (accounting, business, management or computer science)
