VP of Engineering

About us:

RoomStory.com is looking towards its next phase of growth and has identified a large market opportunity in the home renovation space, which is attracting significant interest. Being the brainchild of two engineers turned entrepreneurs, technology is at the heart of this business, and there are plenty of cool things in our tech roadmap.

We are looking for smart, young, enthusiastic technologists who are passionate about building systems to join the core team and lead the technology effort. Our product will be a combination of web and mobile platforms, revolving around a core analytics engine to deliver a stellar customer experience.

Responsibilities:

You will lead, evaluate and identify, on an as needed basis, appropriate technology platforms (including web application frameworks and the deployment stack) for delivering the company's services, strategic planning to achieve business goals.

- Completely own RoomStory's technology strategy, including Software Engineering, Architecture & Analysis, QA, and Infrastructure

- Successfully recruit, manage, motivate and retain the technology organization (internal or external)

- Ensure quality of product and operation

- Provide a highly redundant, secure and fault-tolerant infrastructure

- Recommend technologies that support company organizational needs

- Hands-on experience coding in more than one current web application framework

- Familiar with multiple software development methodologies

- You must be prepared to role up your sleeves and write code yourself.

Required Skills and Experience:

- 3-4 years experience in web technologies with at least 1 team leadership role

- Experience with project and team management

- Excellent architecture, design and software development skills with proven experience in building commercial end user facing applications

- Knowledge of web standards, and scaling internet based systems

- Currently hands-on coding

- Keeping a constant pulse of new technology trends

- Command of Ruby on Rails, PHP, Python or equivalent modern frameworks

- Good understanding of HTML/HTML5, JavaScript

- Good knowledge of modern open source frameworks in the area of high-performance storage and communications

- Knowledge of database management systems

- Experience with UNIX system administration and web server configuration

- Familiarity with information security vulnerabilities and risk management

- Strong verbal and written communication skills

- Thrives in a highly dynamic start-up environment

- Minimum of a bachelors degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, masters preferred
