VSO has worked in Papua New Guinea since 1960. The current strategy focuses on strengthening the capacity of our development partners (government and non-governmental) to improve the quality, delivery and access of services, mainly in the area of education and health.

Role Overview:

PNG is undergoing a period of education reform with a new national curriculum and enhanced three-year diploma for pre-service teachers. The Teacher Education Support Program (2015-17) has been implemented to improve the teacher training of primary English, Maths and Science.

As a VSO Volunteer, you will work as part of a team of volunteers to train student teachers, mentor lecturers at Teacher Training colleges and also facilitate the development of new units and resources.

- Train and assess student teachers in how to teach primary English, Science and Maths

- Train, support & give feedback to PNG lecturers in teaching and training strategies for English, Maths and Professional Studies

- Demonstrate high quality primary lessons and training sessions

- Work with other volunteers and colleagues to develop new teacher training units, videos and resources

- Support the monitoring and evaluation of the program, including monthly reporting

- Share new materials with other volunteers in the team and lecturers around the country

- Build the management capacity of the heads of department

- Contribute to the wider improvement at the college through being an active member of the academic community

Skills, qualifications and experience required:

- At least three years experience as early years, primary or lower secondary teacher

- Degree or advanced degree in primary education

- Able to demonstrate excellent practice in the classroom

- Fluent English proficiency

- Knowledge of primary English and Maths teaching and assessment

- Experience mentoring or training other teachers

- IT skills (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
