Our client - the WORLD LEADER in online retail, operating retail websites in seven countries, offering products in 42+ categories worldwide, has become synonymous with a superior level of convenience, selection, low prices, and customer service.
Now, we have this opening for a Technical Director with the above mentioned client in Chennai.
Hiring Unit – Retail Systems
Retail Systems is responsible for building the scalable systems that support the Worldwide Retail business (60% of revenue). The department is responsible for building the systems that forecast demand, price products, maintain the catalog of products and coordinate with vendors.
The Retail Systems group at Chennai Development Center, focuses on challenging technical problems - like, extracting structured-data from unstructured-content, problems in information retrieval and data mining domains, building specialized state-of-the-art crawling infrastructure capable of supporting millions of items sold on the website and architecting large-scale real-time distributed systems - to make a direct impact to their core Retail business. The online monitoring team collects product information from a variety of online sources through automated web crawlers and feeds it to the retail business teams, pricing and other retail systems within. The success of this team has been expanded upon and today the center is host to numerous engineering and business services teams across Retail and Digital Technology organizations.
Role: Director – Software Engineering and Operations
The Director of Software Engineering and Operations position is a critical role within the company, and reports to the World Wide leader for Pricing. You will be expected to work closely with the Pricing leader, and help expand the scope of work at the Chennai development center.
You will manage technical leaders, program managers, operations managers, as well as a large operations staff (150+ people). The Pricing and Online Monitoring team meet with the CEO and senior leadership quarterly to discuss the impact of company-wide pricing and monitoring initiatives, in this role, you will regularly interact with senior leadership at the Vice-president and Senior Vice-President level.
The Director of Software Engineering and Operations will be focused on expanding the capabilities of the online monitoring systems.
Every year, the addition of an increasing number of unique items to the catalog (Earth’s largest selection), coupled with changing competitive dynamics in the marketplace puts the onus on the leader of this role to find scalable and efficient algorithms to mine data records in web pages.
In addition, you will also be responsible for managing the operations and continuous inspection (audits) teams – ensuring that SLA’s are met and we maintain an unrelenting focus on quality. You will be single point of contact for internal buyers and retail customers – will work with the business to prioritize work, handle systems or operations issues in a timely manner, and communicate to all stakeholders.
Candidates for this role must have:
* Substantive experience building innovative, complex, software, that is ideally, but not necessarily, web based. Strong technical credentials, with at least 8 years leading or managing software development teams, ideally with hands-on architectural or distributed systems experience
* A demonstrated record of hiring and building strong technical and operations teams
* Business analysis acumen, with substantive experience measuring the success of a complex business process and proposing new business opportunities
* Operational support and passion, with experience in establishing, measuring, and meeting service level agreements, improving the availability, performance, and quality of systems, and managing complex on-the fly operational concerns
* A track record of communicating worldwide with executives and non-technical leaders, Experience with multinational companies, dealing with customers across the world.
* Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or the equivalent strongly preferred
Other key skills include:
Strong technology background in internet product development
Good knowledge of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)
Experience in set up & management of large software systems
Background in data mining/data warehousing would be a great advantage. Focus is on strong internet product development people with knowledge of data mining.
In addition to technical competency and strong people management abilities, candidate also should have proven track record in operational excellence
Experience : 15+ years in web services or online tools development
